1000 Player FPS - Guinness World Record for Charity on Sunday!

We’re making history tomorrow thanks to our extremely scalable uPikko and uLink. The game, Man vs. Machine is in the browser - so it’s very possible that we break a few other records as well.

Why?

The official statement for this 1 time only event is “because we can”. But that’s just part of it, the primary reason our CEO, Christian Lönnholm, liked the idea was quote: “About one year ago, we were talking with CCP and we came up with this idea that if we made a MMO FPS in Unity, the technical achievement would be of such magnitude that it would even impress random women in bars”

Who will be there?

Over 10 000 gamers and game developers have let us know of their interest to battle it out this weekend despite conciding with Global Game Jam. We are so grateful for the response. Here is a few of them who will kick your ass this Sunday at 16.00 CET:

Team Machine (the game industry)

  • Minh Le, Creator of Counter-Strike
  • Marek Rabas, Creator of ShadowGun
  • Cyrus Preuss, CTO at Reakktor Media
  • Haraldur Thormundsson at Ericsson
  • Mike Gamble, Industry veteran

Team Man (the gamers)

  • Gaz Deaves, Gaming Editor of Guinness World Records
  • Mark Brown, Wired Magazine
  • Alex Iosup, Assistant Prof.at TU Delft

How do I join?

It’s free and opens on the front page. However, space is limited, and to secure your place you can buy a ticket at Engineers Without Borders - Stockholm, a non-profit humanitarian organization (all money goes straight to them).

I also have some free tickets I’m giving out to my fellow Unity game developers, just pm me your email.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the technical side of the project or anything. But I might not answer them quickly.

Just wanna wish you the best of luck  This seems like a really cool project, and hope you break the world record!

Oops … too late - I have just purchased the ticket from Engineers Without Borders … but I guess that goes to a good purpose, so I don’t mind someone else taking the free tickets

I see a “page view limit exceeded” error, but that’s probably because I don’t have any ticket :).

EDIT: after a few retries it worked!

Hm … everything worked awesome when we were still 100 players - but with 1000, I get stuttering sound and it seems the server also is a little “under load” … I got disconnected the first time after 5 minutes (when it was open to the public), took me about 5 minutes to get back in. But it only lasted about a minute or so … back in

chat messages are epic =)

seems like it failed -.- site is down.

I could actually just play without a problem for about 50 minutes until I disconnected once again … but the client doesn’t behave too well on my Mac Pro … especially sound stutters terribly … but the easter-egg is nice  … would be great if everyone could join in peace

Btw: Last time I was on the server, it was about 980 players - but still I can’t get back on :frowning: … but I think we had 1000 for a moment in the beginning

No
Already at 400 it broke the current world record from Planetside, so no problem there for them

Let’s see how that rebalancing worked … up until now, spawning as machine was kind of a joke - you would usually die after less than 5 seconds …

I guess that wasn’t a real change in the balance … just a “score reset” … but after a few minutes we had again men: 7280, machines 700 … that’s 10:1, and being a machine ain’t fun …

Well that was fun, got in at the end, the machines were owning  both teams were maxed out at 500 per team.
I got in late and ended up with 46 kills.

It was a fun twist in the end, though, when machines suddenly got super-powers and ran over men  … it was only really unfortunate that just before we almost had world peace, the servers ended the game … oh well, almost  … and kudos for breaking the world record!!!

i shot a man in 10 minutes  and gave up…

The game never loaded for me, unfortunately. It couldn’t download the file.
