I am currently beginning to develop an RPG game.
It will have similar characteristics to that of the Pokemon and old Zelda games:
Basically, I’d like some help with the movement scripting.
I’d like the movement to be squared, and for the character to turn and face the position in which they are told to move to using the arrowed keys.
Just to let you know, I haven’t developed a Unity game before and I only have very, very basic knowledge of the scripting.
All help will be greatly appreciated.
This will do the basic movement. You’d have to add some logic to detect obstacles and not move into those squares, as well as facing the direction of movement. That might be a bit much if you don’t really have any scripting knowledge, so you might want to learn more scripting first.
Okay, I’ve applied the script to the Character, but nothing happens, so I presume that I have to alter some of the scripting.
You say I’ve got to learn more scripting. Well, I don’t really know how I could learn. I think getting along with this project and learning as I go along would benefit me quite a lot.
So, would you mind giving me a little helping hand and let me know what I’ve got to play around with within the script?
i know this is disappointing, because everyone wants to start making cool games right away, that’s why you want to make games after all.
the problem is that, without any experience at all, your project will be a mess very soon, then it’s almost impossible to keep working on it and it definately won’t be fun to do so.
there are alot of good tutorials around that will help you getting started, if you work through them all you will probably be able to work out why this script isn’t working in your game by yourself.
i can definately understand that you want to start with your current game idea right away, but if you start by making only a few very small games this will help you to make the final game alot better and it’s gonna be much more fun also, because you’re not gonna be that frustrated with smaller projects.
make sure you write your current game ideas down and while you learn about unity and scripting, collect all the other ideas that come to your mind, even if they seem stupid in the beginning, sometimes they turn out to be not so stupid at all.
do yourself a favour and follow tonyd’s advice, you won’t regret it.
regarding your current problem, you won’t need to alter the script, your scene is probably not set up correctly, but we can’t help without more info about your scene.
Okay, well I’ll get to learning the scripting.
I’ve started watching and following some of the TornadoTwins tutorials.
Any more other tutees that I should be aware of?
And for the layout, the first “tutorial level” will be set out like this:
The center area will be a market area, with people browsing, stalls and shop keepers.
The rooms above will have objects in which we can learn skills and start to practice.
