2 Questions About Upgrading to Pro

Hi all,

  1. When I upgrade to Unity Pro, will all my Asset Store purchases I’ve already made carry over to the Pro version just fine? How’s that work?

  2. Is it possible to simply load up my current project that’s being made with Free, into Pro and continue working on it from here on out? Or will I need to start over?

Thanks!

There isn’t a “Pro version”, there’s only one Unity app. Pro is a license, not a separate download or anything. When buying a Pro license, nothing changes except that the Pro features in the editor will be unlocked.

Thanks. So does that mean question #2 will not be an issue? I’d heard some chatter about work not being legally compatible from Free to Pro or some such.

Well, don’t know about what “chatter” you hear, but your free project should load into Pro without any problems. What’s not legal is to have a team with a mix of free and Pro.

Thanks. This paragraph in the FAQ is what got me curious;

“If you are a Legal Entity, you may not combine files developed with the free version of Unity with any files developed by you (or by any third party) through the use of Unity Pro. Please see our EULA for further information regarding license usage.”

Would continuing to create my game in the Pro version be exactly that?

Keep reading.

I read the whole FAQ, can you be more specific?

You can easily and without any worries upgrade Unity and still work on your project - no problem.

“If you are a Legal Entity, you may not combine files developed with the free version of Unity with any files developed by you (or by any third party) through the use of Unity Pro. Please see our EULA for further information regarding license usage.”

Every person working with Unity on a project that contains the use of pro features, needs to have Unity Pro.

Thanks all!

Wait, I’m confused. It also says

http://unity3d.com/company/legal/eula

So as long as they’re not part of your “legal entity” (so, company), you’re OK? Otherwise, wouldn’t half the asset store products be illegal in Unity Pro? Do freelancers need to have pro (or does their creating assets for your project make them part of your legal entity)? If so, wouldn’t there be a huge problem in the commercial sections?

And does a team member need Unity Pro if they don’t actually use it for the project (make textures in GIMP or make models in 3DS max, and “integrate” those files)?

So I had a quick word with someone who has more knowledge about the EULA than me and this is what he said:

Asset Store assets can be used with by developers with Unity Free and Unity Pro without restriction.

If you upgrade to Unity Pro, you must upgrade all licenses owned by you (or your entity) used to create the project.

Hope this clarified things for you.

Yes, it does. Thank you very much.

But, just to clarify:

Random Joe you meet at a bar uses Unity Free. You have Unity Pro, and you work together on a project = OK
Freelancer (Not part of your company) use Unity Free to create content. You have Unity Pro = OK
Employee of your company uses Maya and Photoshop to create art, doesn’t create assets using Unity Free = OK
Employee of your company uses Unity Free, another employee uses Unity Pro for the same project = NOT OK

No. The project is being worked on by a user of free and a user of Pro. This is not allowed.

Yes, if you have purchased a product from the freelancer, such as a plugin, a script or some artwork. It’s important that the freelancer does not have your project, otherwise they are working with you on your project which violates the above.

If they do not need to use Unity, then of course they don’t need a Pro license. If these artists need access to the project, then they’ll need Pro.

Not okay, yes.

Thanks again. That stuff has been really confusing me.

So, to sum it up (as I understand it), if a free user sends assets your way, you can add them to your project, as long as they don’t have access to said project.

Yes. In fact, you should have no knowledge of them even having Unity.

OK, good. The artist who made one of the models for my game previewed the asset in Unity. I was worried that I would have to cut it out or send in my team of highly trained super soldiers to force him to buy Unity Pro.

Is the license upgrade retro active to my 2 year old project? I mean, what happens when I’ve been creating a game in Unity for years and then upgrade when I’m done and release a game immediately, can I do that? I haven’t owned the upgraded version for more than week but my game obviously took some real time to build and its already out?

The license is at the editor level, not the project level. Though according to Unity changes made to your project do record what license level you are (so they can catch teams actively mixing license levels).

So you won’t have a problem opening a 2 year old project with your upgraded license, and you’'ll have access to the few Plus/Pro only features immediately.
