2 terrain questions

Hi people!

I have two important questions and I really can’t find any solution…

The first thing are trees on the terrain. Well I read the tutorial how to add new trees but look at this image:

as you can see i imported one obj mesh (export from maya. 2 parts trunk and leafes) but when i import them they look like two seperated meshes - and this won’t work with the unity tree system… how can I fix this in unity?

the second thing: is there any option or script that handels the “set-this-object-on-the-terrain-where-I-pointed-the-mouse” thing? I mean, I know how to set things up using the XYZ gizmo but this is reallyfrustrating. I only want to drag a mesh in my scene and the XYZ point should be where i drop it on the terrain.

thanks for your help in advanced!!!

Hey DrFromTheLab

I think the reason why you’re seeing two meshes is because you had two separate layers in Maya. When you bring it into Unity and make a prefab out of it, it’s going to look like two separate objects because technically they are.

You should be able to just use the painting tools to get a tree where you want it. Of course the resolution of your terrain will dictate how accurately it will be placed.

Hope this helps,
Nathan

what should I do to avoid this “two layer” thing in maya 2009??

about the painting on the ground - yeah but I want to place other things on the terrain like buildings and so on - trees are an other thing

In Maya combine the 2 meshes.

Hold down the Command key (Control key on Windows) when using the transform gizmo to snap objects to the terrain’s surface.

workinWow every thing works fine  thanks a lot guys!!! [ups… not working :frowning: ]

Hi there,

I’m trying to import a terrain from a RAW field i made in photoshop.

I’m a bit confused at the different resolution settings in the terrein resolution and import settings. Are these explained in detail somewhere?

Also, i’m trying to import a 4096by4096 heightmap, representing about 2 by 2 km of terrain. Is that something Unity should be able to handle? I got it ingame, but it tiles to fill the terrain four times (2by2), instead of being just the same area as the terrain.

cheers

Hi again!

So I have one more question…
In the attachment I have one of my trees - exported from maya 2008. I can import it but there are more meshes then I need. I can remove the parts i do not need (last part of this mesh seems to be the right one). i can attach (2)textures to this 2 sections. But now when i add this ready scalled and prepared tree to a prefab and then I us them in the terrain engine everything goes wrong.

  1. i do not see any preview of this mesh
  2. when i place the trees on the terrain they are sooooo tiny!! fE when the prefab has 7m the same tree has max 5cm on the terrain. Why? please can someone help me!!!

  1. check the import settings and the import scale. Its likely on 0.01
Also, the meter size from the modeller is of no importance. Relevant are the absolute coordinates, so 7m is the same as 7km and 7mm after export, its just 7 3D units in size
