2020.3.32f1 Unity.exe deleting itself and not in Unity Hub anymore as current install

Ok, so I have a classroom of Windows 10 computers. There are about 32 computers. I just installed Unity 2020.3.32f1 on all 32 computers + 2 teacher computers. No errors. All of them opened correctly and worked correctly.

I had my students going through this tutorial:

They were adding the Terrain Tools package that is in preview/beta still. They added a few assets from the asset store.

About 6 students in the class have some type of fatal error where Unity crashes and deletes the Unity.exe file. When we try to open Unity Hub we get an error saying we don’t have permission to run Unity Hub. Even when I run it as admin, it says we don’t have permission. After reboot, Unity 2020.3.32f1 is gone from Unity Hub. Going to the directory in Program Files, it seems that all 2020.3.32f1’s files are still there except for one - the Unity.exe file.

I use the existing Uninstall.exe still in the Unity 2020.3.32f1 folder, clean restart, reinstall Unity 202.3.32f1 using Unity Hub. For some students this works. For others, the same problem reoccurs. Crashes. No permission to open Unity Hub. Reboot and the 2020.3.32f1’s Unity.exe is gone but the rest of the install is still there.

Anyone have any ideas or advice?

I will submit as a bug report too … but would appreciate any advice on work-arounds, as now I can’t even reinstall Unity 2020.3.32f1 on those machines any more. Most of the time, just reopening Unity Hub or Unity 2020.3.32f1 causes the crash again right after a fresh install.

Dang no solutions?

It is to the point now, where students just try to create a new project in 2020.3.32f1 and it crashes with the same error about little red Windows box saying do not have permission. Then it uninstalls itself.

With old Unity Hub the install is just not listed any more and the actual folder containing Unity 2020.3.32f1 is missing the Unity.exe

With the new Unity Hub it literally shows it uninstalling Unity 2020.3.32f1. It just sits there saying uninstalling editor for a long time.

For a count, I have 32 computers all less than a year old and with clean installs of Unity 2020.3.32f1 on them. This is the first project we have done in Unity 2020. We have been using Unity 2019.4 until now. Total count is 9 of 32 computers had this error. We are going back to Unity 2019.4. I would love any ideas on possible solutions.

You might want to compare the log files between working and non-working systems. https://support.unity.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039118331-I-have-been-asked-to-provide-a-log-file-where-do-I-find-this- Are you using anti-virus? Seems all the machines would be the same though

That does suspiciously sound like some AV software is deleting Unity.exe.

Ok, I will check it out.

Our school does use Antivirus software on the computers, but no other software program has had this issue before.

We are just going back to using 2019.4 as it is reliable and doesn’t have this issue. No matter the number of uninstalls/reinstalls, this system persists sporadically and unpredictably on about 1/4 to 1/2 of the machines in the class.

You could install Unity to a location that non-admin processes don’t have access to modify, and see if it’s still getting deleted. If it is, it must be something on the system that is doing it.
