I’m currently just switching between different images to make animation, is there a built in feature that will make transitions between different positions smooth, like 3D?

A good video tutorial would be nice

Yes it will work in between transition.You have to make sprite and make the animation in the animation window.Rest the process same as 3D.

Here are the steps-
1.Select the textures which you want to use in animation.Set Texture Type as Sprite 2D and apply.
2.Click on Window tab and click on Animation.
3.Drag & Drop all images in Animation window and save it by Ctrl+s and rename it.
4.Click on Play icon in animation window,you will see your animation playing.
5.Increase/Decrease speed of animation by increasing/decreasing number of samples in animation window respectively.
