2D game dev, when and where do I start?

Hey,

Just wanted to get a bit of direction on this. How should I go about learning 2D game development with Unity3D? I understand there are new 2D tools coming out in the 4.3(?) update, is it worth jumping in now or waiting for those tools?

Thanks

Hi,

Try Orthello2D Framework… Simple and Easy

Sweet, came across a tutorial for Orthello2D - I’ll follow it up, thanks.

Any other thoughts/suggestions?

Not really because I new here also  Good Luck ~

Thanks, you too!

If ANYONE ELSE has more suggestions to add it’d be greatly appreciated ;). I’ll get on with Orthello2D in the meantime.

Also check out Uni2d

Personally I’d start with some basic tutorials before you even jump in and start using someone else’s tools.

A great tutorial is here: http://www.3dbuzz.com/training/view/unity-standard/simple-2d-shooter

Basic space shooter game where they go over all the coding and setup. Really gives you the ground work to start your endeavor with a very basic 2D game.

I like that series because they have a pretty good pace so it’s easy to keep up and follow along. It’s also free.

It would also be a good idea to do some tutorials on how to use unity’s interface. 3dbuzz has a fundamentals course, but there are several on youtube.

You’ll need to understand how to navigate unity for both 3D and 2D, and if you go through that first it will help you keep up with tutorials. It wouldn’t hurt to set up some scenes and go through all the pieces to get a good feel for it.

Thanks guys. So far I’ve read that Orthello2D is popular so I think I may begin learning through those tutorials… but I do plan to do quite a few tutorials so I’ll be sure to go over my options - the 3dbuzz one looks great and I’ll check out Uni2d. Really appreciate it, I’ll be sure to ask again if I need help.

hello… i would like to build 2D game… emm… compare with adobe flash and unity3D game engine… which is better?
