2D Hack'n'Slash adventure silliness

Anyone who’s worked on long projects knows what it’s like - sometimes you just want to do something short, fun and silly before you completely lose your marbles (although it’s probably too late for me on that count).

That’s why I decided to take a break from more serious projects and try and do a really quick, 48hr-gamejam-style 2D room-based adventure game.
Technically, it was mostly all working within 48hrs of starting it, but then I kept fiddling with it, adding the occasional daft and derranged thing, and more terrible sprite artwork that looks like it was drawn by a 10 year old.
(I never got any better at art after the age of 10, I’m 34 now, it may be too late on that count as well).

About a month ago I created a promo video featuring the title music (yeah, I wrote that too, I’m not really a musician either…):

I still haven’t quite finished it, but it’s nearly, nearly, nearly done, and I hope to have it online to play soon (maybe this week!) along with a revamp of my website. I’m thinking of surrounding it with a comical making-of article, but I’m not quite sure how in-depth that will be.

Even though it’s a very simple, derivative game that takes about 20-30m to complete, I’ve had fun making it, learning my way around Unity and other tools new to me, and look forward to getting back to the (slightly) more serious projects again soon.

So remember folks, when you’re banging your head against the wall, trying to get something just ‘perfect’, working on the same thing for months or years, wondering if you’ll ever finish, trying to appease everybody’s criticism, sometimes it helps to have a moment of silliness. Works for me

Just curious… If you want to learn about unity… why would you make a 2D game? Wouldn’t it be more interesting to make 3D?
You could still make 2D gameplay, don’t get me wrong. But unity isn’t called Unity3D for nothing ;).

I like what you said there about the project. I also got sort of stuck last month, I agree that you sometimes need to take a step back.

Good luck with this, and your serious project.

Oh lord I’ve done this many times myself when I’ve gotten stuck on my main project. Usually it ends up with something short and silly that isn’t worth pursuing, but sometimes it turns into something awesome! I have quite a few projects to select from when I am done with the one I am working on, and I can’t wait

SEG.Veenstra: I don’t see any point in a game being 3D just to be 3D. I personally prefer to play games that are good, and it being 2D or 3D doesn’t weigh in at all when judging it. For example, the best Mario game to me is Super Mario World. Sure, New Super Mario Bros. looks amazing and all that with its fancy 3D graphics, but SMW 0wnz it hands down. Not because it was 2D mind you, just because it was better.

The “Long cat” made me laugh. Looks fun

oh, a discofloor room, very neat

@ SEG.Veenstra - oh I’m working on 3D stuff too, most of the professional work I’ve done elsewhere is on 3D games, but I don’t currently have access to much in the way of modelling tools, and don’t have much modelling or 3D animation experience (something else I’ll work on soon) so thought it would be easier to do something quickly in 2D (and might have been wrong  ).

One of my other Unity projects is a set of 3D mesh tools and builders - staircases, lathe and extrude tools, etc, a bit like in the Unreal editor, and the next two major games I’m planning - one is 2D and the other is 3D.

I just chose Unity to use for general game development use because it’s a powerful, easy to use complete solution - like most of us I’m sure  - it also resembles tools I’ve used on big budget projects, and I’ve never learnt Flash - which is what most people use for 2D, although there’s an awful lot of 2D games being made with Unity and Unreal as well.

Cheers, Overwind.

It’s actually NOT called Unity3D, it’s called Unity.

Overwind, this project looks great. Usually when I make something small like this it ends up being some huge, epic game. Take a look at the game in my signature, it took loads of control to make that as small as it is. Your art reminds me of old games like Commander Keen, which is awesome to me!

Thanks Ayrik. Had a go at your game, I’m now definitely scared of ogres and the Behemoth!

Right, I’m trying to force myself to stop tinkering with this one now and get on with my other stuff, although I’ll do standalone versions for download at some point (I want to add minor extras to those) - and then try and find somewhere suitable to host them.

It’s playable online here: 100 Rooms

Let me know if there’s any problems. I know there’s a million more things I could do with it or add to it, I might give it the odd tweak or spit of polish every now and again, but I never meant to take this one too seriously

Show me some facebook page love for news on future Unity projects if you like: Overwound Games
I’ll try and like any other Unity-dev-related pages and stuff in return.

Cheers, Overwind.

Unity’s strength is in it’s cross platform support and editor. Making a 2D or 3D game doesn’t really effect this and Unity is fine for making 2D games IMO. Some of the best selling games made with Unity have been 2D games.

Hey, I played it for a little bit until I got to a lava room with moving platforms. Those platforms are impossible to stay on with the mouse controls. Other than that it was simple and fun.

Those platforms are a bit tough sometimes, yeah - maybe I’ll make them a bit bigger!

The collision’s a bit funny at that point - you are effectively looking down on a normal cylindrical character controller, and it is offset on the player sprite so it’s near his feet, but sometimes that doesn’t seem to matter and the physics interaction with the moving blocks goes funny, or if you’re off the edge slightly it’s difficult to get back on it.

I think when I put those moving platfoms in is when I decided to do the continue points!
I’ve played through on my PC, Mac and laptop now - I don’t think I tried doing the moving platforms with the trackpad, that would probably be harsh - I’d best investigate that

Maybe I should put that continue point in the door as well so you really can’t miss it…

Thanks for giving it a whirl though!

“You have met an unfortunate demise.”

My goal was to find the long cat, but I’m afraid I’ve failed :frowning:

Oh dear! I think there’s 3 long cats. Maybe I should mark them on the map

If I had the time I’d probably fill it with memes. And cats. I thought about putting a Rickroll in there at one point, then thought better of it.

Then I think I put in the black hole of despair… :open_mouth:
