2d platafomer check points

hello there!. im just having some problems creating my game, usually im learning in the 3d platfomer , using the reference but, ineed something like the respawns that are in the 3d platform tutorial, the problem is:

how to create checkpointsfor a 2d plataform?,

i want the character touches the check point and save the place, if he dies it respawn there and when he touches another respawn its saves the new position.

can someone help me?

im not a programmer so i need the more efective way.
