2D Platformer - Artistic Feedback

Hey guys. I’m working on a 2D platformer game with a friend of mine. I’m doing all the coding and he’s handling all the art.

This is what we have at the moment:

The gold and lives display are just placeholders for now.

All feedback is appreciated, but I’d really like some feedback on this skill book. How does it look? A friend of mine commented that the bottom of the book looks too ovular.

The mapping is just for testing things. I’ll be remapping a legit area later.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Edit: This is an updated skill book after talking with my artist.

I like the style!

But it’s planned to play on mobile? If so, I think it’s everything so small(ok I have an 4" device). The skill book looks nice, but you could try to use some effects in the text, to feel like it’s actually written in a book(you can see that the book pages are curved but the text are flat). But in overall it’s a nice style, keep going!

PS: A new text font would be nice too

Hey, thanks for the reply. It’s actually for the PC so the size isn’t an issue. No phone plans, haha.

I’ll definitely look into adjusting the text to look like it’s more ‘written’ on the page. Maybe with a nice cursive font to help sell the written-in-a-book feel.

Looks very nice overall. I can see what your friend is saying about the book. Since the top of the book is showing the page raised then you might expect the bottom to be flat or whatever but it is the angle. Anyway that is just nitpicky.

Thanks for the reply/compliment, haha. We’re happy when people are nitpicky because we want everything to look great.

So I talked with my artist after both of your replies and he made a couple edits. This is the updated skill book. What do you guys think? (I’ll also update my initial post with the new skill book).

I’m not crazy about the trees.

The ones in the front look like a different art style than the others and seem to have too many colors.

The ones in the 2nd layer are bigger than the ones in the front, even though they’re further away.

And over all, all of them have a very boring form to them. They’re just logs sticking straight out of the ground. It would look a lot better if they have more directions for the eye to move around.

Take a look at some other people’s work and see what I mean. Here

See how much it adds when the trees lean and have branches going in different directions?

The color in yours looks spot on though. Very nice.

Thank you for pointing this out. It’s something we’ve been thinking about. I talked with my artist and we decided to redo the trees that are closest to the player to be larger. This way they will match the background better and allow for us to have ‘platforms’ up in the top of the tree.

Adjusting the actual background may come a little later. Some branches and maybe some angle adjustments like you suggested.

Thanks.

Wow! That’s a huge improvement. I was really impressed with the original look, too.

Overall, I really like the look. It’s not exactly unique as far as pixel art goes, but it’s all very well-drawn and detailed. The elements that are supposed to stand out (walk-able terrain, ladders, chests, your character) do so, and the background is quite beautiful. I’d love to see it in motion with a parallax effect.

I have a working parallax background, actually. It might be a little hard to see due to the speed being set fairly low(We want it to be a fairly subtle effect)… And the left platform has no objects on it for detailing… But here you go! (Sorry for the low quality mp4)

I’m glad you enjoy the art. I’m sure my artist will be happy when I tell him, haha.

Edit: Here’s what it looks like behind the current foreground trees: https://i.gyazo.com/3edfa4a599b13a588f470d07f10f7760.mp4
I used my working skill book to upgrade my movement speed so I could move faster in this clip

That was just an image I found on google to show what I meant.

Oh damn. I didn’t even notice. I stand by what I said though: Tilted trees look better, but I like how they were originally drawn too.
