3.x Licensing & Activation FAQ

Hi guys,

I have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions regarding Licensing and Activation, that should enable you to bypass the most common errors our users are faced with, when trying to activate or migrate.

How many machines can I install my copy of Unity on?

Each Unity license allows a single person to use Unity on two machines that they have exclusive use of.

I receive the following error message upon activation: Your License has been activated too many times, please contact Unity Support.

The warning happens because you have already activated your copy of Unity on the allowed machines.

I want to move my Unity license to a new/alternative machine.

The migration procedure for Unity is pretty simple. Youll need to Uninstall Unity from the machine you wish to migrate. Thats your side done! Youll then need to send a Migration Request to the Support Team (support@unity3d.com). The email will need to include the following:

  • The Serial number you are using
  • The name of the machine you are migrating from
  • The name of the machine you are migrating to
  • The name of the individual the Serial has been assigned to

The Support Team will then allow for migration, to your new machine.

Will uninstalling Unity from an old machine automatically allow for activation on my new machine?

No, The Unity Support Team will have to allow for migration of your license, meaning you can then proceed to activate on your new machine.

Can I use Unity3 with a 2.x Serial?

No, in order to use Unity 3, youd need to upgrade to a 3.x license. You can do this Online, via our Website store. https://store.unity3d.com/shop/

My license wont activate using the online activation procedure!

This may be due to one of many things. The easiest way around this, is to activate using the Manual Activation procedure. You can find out how by following the link below: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/205/manual-offline-activation-of-unity

I have replaced an item of Hardware, now my copy of Unity needs to be re-registered.

Unity creates a licensing file that takes information from a number of places within your machine, making the file unique. When an item of Hardware is replaced, our Licensing servers will see this as a request from a new machine. As with the migration procedure, you'll need to email the Support Team (support@unity3d.com) in order for them to reactivate your license.

The Editor freezes when waiting for a response from the Activation Server.

In some cases the Online Activation process seems to 'Hang' and takes a little longer than expected, when waiting for a response from the Activation Server. We advise that you wait it out for 5-10 minutes before exiting the Editor. Give the Manual activation process (Stated above) a try if the Online activation continues to hang!

Please read the FAQ before contacting support@unity3d.com, as most Licensing cases are pretty trivial. Please let me know if you feel something that hasn't been covered here, ought to be.

Maybe you could clarify the answers about the trial licenses. On the web page it appears that downloading the trial for desktop allows you to try it on iPhone as well.

But there's no information anywhere that shows how you turn it on or what additionally you have to download if anything.

Can you state unequivocally if we are supposed to be able to do iPhone development or not with the trial and how you make it work please.

Hi Unity Questions

I read the end-userlicens doc but could not find was i was looking for.
I also look in this faq.

Let me just sum up what has caused the question.
Me and some friend made a game for the iphone in unity free.
We missed our deadline had some other trouble so the firm we thought would public the game said that they had changed their mind.

So now we need to buy a licens or do something else.
But we are not interested in build a unity-licence at the moment - to much of an expence.
But we had found a person with another firm who owns a unity-pro-iphone licens.
I understand we cant just borrow his computer and build the game on it, so we would like to use his firm to publish the game.
Is that legal? can we pay him something? or can he have the game and pay us something?

I’m stuck with a problem that there seems to be no solution for from your side. We purchased a standard Android license a few weeks ago, and our purchasing person here purchased a Unity Pro license yesterday. Both of these need to be used together, but a Unity support person replied to me this morning that it’s not possible to merge existing licenses. For licenses that cost $1500, I find it surprising that you do not ‘have the resources’ to handle such a request. Furthermore, I’m taken aback by the fact that they did not offer any other way to resolve this…not very good customer service!

When a person purchases the licenses, there are NO WARNINGS that this is limitation that one will have to look out for, and I can’t help but wonder how many other people have had this same problem? What would you have people like me do, purchase another $400 or $1500 license?

I would like to request allocating resources to merge licenses. If this is not possible, then could we please process a refund. You are leaving good paying customers with little choice but to get in touch with financial institutions to cancel credit card payments etc, and this leaves a very bitter taste, tainting what so far has been a very good experience with Unity.

I also have a licensing problem, I bought a license yesterday I installed it to my office and my home on a Mac, then I wanted to install it on my PC because I prefer. and there he did not want to install my license on the grounds that I had already installed twice.
Do I understand that it is better to use a version cracker paid $ 1500 a version?

Why software companies routinely break the candy of their customers and not of cracker software?

Other publishers are using simpler methods such as a USB stick with this solution I must not ask permission to go to the toilet! what kind of world we live!

I have a single user license and this is the case and on the machine used, it’s nobody else but me?

When you bought toilet paper is not asking you where you are going to use it anyway?

Found it look in your Documents folder for a folder named Unity 5.
