3D armature not working, 2019.4

Hello!
I made this rigged model to import into a project I’m working on, it looks like this:

So, I set up an animator for this model and went to animate the model’s armature like normal, but I kind of ran into a problem: It wouldn’t work- the model’s bones were just empty objects.

Are there any settings I should change?
Animation has worked pretty well for all of the other characters I’ve made but this one doesn’t seem to be cooperating.

figured it out, it looked like i was using a mesh renderer on the model instead of a skinned mesh renderer
