Hello guys let me introduce myself, i am Karl Robinson and i am currently studying a Bse Honors degree in Games Development, i have chosen my career path and i want to make 3D modelling my career path, i finish my course in June and i graduate so this next 6 months for me will be very important, meanwhile i need to make my portfolio and get some work done. I am ok at modelling but it is the Normal mapping and texturing that lets me down.
I would like you guys to give me recommendations to what I should do in this next 6 months, i am willing to pay someone to come help me Via Skype and look at my work and tell me your honest opinion, also to sit down on skype for a few hours a week and give me some lessons on 3D modelling and Normal mapping.
Well, before anyone can give any advice, you really need to let us know where you intend to take your 3D modeling; do you want to model for in game, animated projects (game promotion), etc? That information is needed to determine what advice to give since different areas typically have certain methods that work better. For instance, normal mapping is good for creating dimension in games because it’s not nearly as resource intensive as standard bump or displacement mapping, but it’s not nearly as popular for use in animated projects or “still projects” (like promo shots and so on) because the results aren’t as realistic.
3ds Modeling isn’t something you can master in a year.
You’re almost always learning new things/ways to do things.
Programs like 3ds max/Maya have so much stuff you can do I haven’t even used 50% of everything on 3ds max.
Mostly because I just never had a need to, but it takes years…
School can only teach you so much, a degree doesn’t mean you’re a professional, it just means you’ve been told things.
You can tell me something all day long, but if I never use it, I’ll forget about it.
The best way to truly be great at what you’re trying to achieve is to just practice.
