3D to 2D Animations

Hi guys, i read a post about game Dead Cells when they explain that they create the game character in full 3D with animations and then they use them to create and animate a 2D sprite character, so i would like to know if someone could explain me this better. Do they model, rig and animate it 3D and then choose the poses and trace them with sprite art? Or there is a way to do it diferently?

  3. render 3D model at low rez into a sprite sheet
  4. hand correct sprite sheet

How do you render the 3d model at low rez without antialising? Custom shaders?
