3ds Max 2011 Editor Import Problem - File not recognized

Hi,

I’m trying to import a mesh by using a 3ds max 2011 .max file and the editor is not importing it correctly. I get a file that I can’t instantiate in the Editor that contains some parameters under the FBXImporter section in the Inspector.

Everything is working correctly when I am exporting and using the FBX format.

The documentation states the following:

http://unity3d.com/support/documentation/Manual/HOWTO-ImportObjectMax.html

Saving them in the original .max format is recommended.

That does not seem to work with 3ds max 2011 .max files. And is this information in the documentation still relevant for Unity 3.0 or is it obsolete?

And if I right click on the file in the editor and select Reimport File I get the following error message:

3ds Max could not be found.
Make sure that 3ds Max is installed and the max file has 3ds Max as its ‘Open with’ application!

Max is correctly installed and the files are correctly associated, and it works correctly with FBX files.

Is 3ds Max 2011 supported or does it only work with previous versions?

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Hi there!

Have you made sure you have the latest fbx-exporter installed?

Try downloading and installing from here:

If that doesn`t help, feel free to keep this thread alive, so maybe I can ask around here for possible solutions

FBX Import is working correctly. The problem occurs when I put a .max file in the Assets folder.

Can Unity import .max files directly, as stated in the documentation?

"Saving them in the original .max format is recommended."

Or is this a deprecated and obsolete feature?

Unity uses the 3dsmax fbx importer when its importing the file though, so it could be some strange stuff going on there. I forwarded this thread to the responsible devs though, so hopefully they`ll chime in here when they have time.

I see. This is why you were recommending me to install the latest FBX plugin. I will try that now and see if it fixes the issue. I’m not sure if I have the latest version. I will post back the result.

Thanks for the information.

For some obscure reasons, the file association was indeed broken and 3ds Max was not the default app to open .max files… I re-assigned it correctly and it’s now working properly. I also installed the latest FBX plugin.

Thanks a lot for your help.
