It looks like in 5.3.4 non-humanoid animations yield mesh distortions.
Base model:

Is there a fix for this?

Hi we are the creators of the great horned owl model on the unity asset store. Someone reported your issue to us last night.
So we just downloaded unity 5.3.4f1 and brought in a blank project the owl and the glide animation, by default the animation are set to generic: at that point no issue like you seem to have. then we switched both fbx files to use the legacy rig, and here again nothing to report no issue like you’re having…
So here multiple ideas: try to create a new project, import the unity package in question. close the project.
Then create a new project, and from there re import the raw fbx files that you just imported earlier in the other project. Why?
Because maybe unity 5.3.4 don’t import old .unitypackages correctly anymore. The package you’re showing to us is the great horned owl and it might have been a V3.5.6 or 3.5.7 of unity.
Also sometimes when you export a unitypackage out of windows and you import it on a MAc machine , you can have some weird issues.
Hope this helps.
