1. Mid-way, Visual Studio forces a hard reset without saying anything. After reboot, nothing happens. If I open download asst. again, I’m back to square 1 awkwardly with VS2017 “sort of installed, but not really”.
2a. If I quickly bring up “run” and abort shutdown, I’ll be left with this below.
2b. I’ll also be left with this exact same screen if I ran visual studio 2015 AT ALL since last reboot. The first time I tried to run, I got here and left it overnight – still same place. I reboot, didn’t open VS15 one time, and only then got to 2.a
Oops I said hard reset, but meant “forced reset” without prompting: Everything just stopped and said “Rebooting your PC!”.
It worked after I manually browsed to that tmp file and installed it myself. I can probably uninstall fine, but it’s working now. It shows up on the uninstall list.
Yes – Unity installed first (and fine – I thought it may have been missing something, but runs seemingly okay). VS will not install and the Unity download asst will never end if you opened Visual Studio 2015 at any point of time since last reboot. This is when you need to manually open the file.
An alternative route >> If you reboot without opening a previous version of visual studio, THEN run the Unity download asst, it still force-resets and you lose the installer and it’s mysterious whether it worked or not.
^ Both workarounds seem to work, but it’s a bit misleading to the end-user if it worked fine or not.
I’m working at Microsoft in the Visual Studio team, working with Unity making sure we provide a good experience with VS 2017. Forcing a hard restart indeed doesn’t sound great, we’d like to investigate what’s going on.
We have a tool to collect Visual Studio install logs. If you could please run it and share the results with me, we’ll have a look at what’s happening.
Could you head to: https://aka.ms/vscollect download collect.exe, and run it from an elevated (Administrator) command prompt. It will produce a zip in: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\vslogs.zip
Could you then upload that to onedrive/dropbox/google drive and PM me the link? Thank you!
Apologies – I said hard reboot (as if my computer instantly reset as if I crashed), but I meant to say forced reboot (a proper shutdown/reset, but with no prompt or anything – the installer never finishes and mystery is in the air if the installer actually finished everything it needed to install).
