I opened the same project as I had with 5.4 and tried to build for WebGL.
With 5.4 the build took around 5 minutes, with 5.6 its been more than 1 hour and it still building. The build progress bar is around 1/3 only after all this time.
Also when i build scene bundles, the same scene when built with 5.6 is 10 meg larger than with 5.4
I can only imagine how much larger the WebGL build will be when its completed.
UPDATE: Seems the build files are now in a folder called “Build”, however the build created by 5.6 is 40 meg larger than the build created by 5.4.
5.4 build was around 60 Meg, this 5.6 build is over 100 meg and took around 2 hrs to build when 5.4 took around 5 minutes.
It took me weeks to get 5.4 build from almost 200 meg down to 60 meg, now without doing anything is back up to 100 meg with 5.6
I think there is something seriously wrong with 5.6 release, i have to uninstall it and go back to 5.4 if i ever want to release an WebGL app.
I guess Unity is free so cant complain too much… but the way things are going it looks like i just wasted 6 months creating a Unity app that can’t be released because seems im going in circles.
Maybe they should fix the basic things like the gigantic size of the builds instead of working on new fancy features like playing 360 videos? if the builds are 100 meg and scenes bundles are 40 meg, less people will want to play the game because it takes so long to load and to change scenes.
So I just wasted a day going to 5.6 and now back to 5.4
my 5.4 build was 31mb for a build containing only scripts, on 5.6 it was 6mb for me. It could possibly be your export settings having been reset for your textures or something, which typically take the most space, but I guess that doesn’t explain the long build times
I understand your frustration, however, take into consideration that 5.6 is still in Beta. I would discourage anyone to use any software in alpha/beta stage in your production, not just Unity.
Having said that, we would really appreciate if you could submit a bug report.
