64 bit color

I’d like to use 64 bit color modes (16 bit per channel), but can’t seem to find a way to import 64 bit textures. The reason is that 32 bit colors only have an 8 bit alpha channel, so when I layer a few sprites on top of each-other, the gradient doesn’t look great.

Is there anything I can do?

Unity technically can use RGBAHalf, but there’s no importer support for that, and not all hardware can use it anyway.

I know there is a technique to be able to have nice gradients using a noise to reduce the color banding. I found it somewhere using Google and it had to do with image compression. With adding noise you can fool the image compression and have nice gradients with an almost invisible little noise.

The technique is called Dithering,

The technique is used in many video games. It’s also used most in old video games that require few colors.

if you zoom the image, the dithering look like this. In this case, the image use only 2 colors.

Here is a good link that resolve your problem using photoshop:

What sprites are you layering that it produces a single gradient? Multiple gradient sprites?
