I am looking for giant terrains, and I notice you could set the unity terrain to whatever you want, so I set it to 8kx8k to see as far as the eye could see. But what I want to know, is for big worlds like this, would there be a better system to use for a large terrain like this? or bigger?
Also a good tool to make generate a random heightmap to make big continental type islands, for a good healthy random environment surrounded by ocean. The borders of the playable area would be quite a distance out in the water.
Anything you guys think would be best for this? I was looking at Proworld on the asset store, but wouldnt heightmap resolution need to be 8kx8k too? The biggest heightmaps i seem to find are 4x4.
I guess a better question would be what is the biggest First Person environment anybody has ever made with unity getting good FPS. I need a huge world. Ridiculously huge. Complete with Foliage.
The default terrain should work fine, although try to have quite a few hills and valleys, then bake a high res occlusion culling on it. Something that large wont run on a netbook, but for most pcs it should be fine
Yeah. Targetting higher end PC’s anyway. But what could I use to make a heightmap so large to get an auto generation for the land features?
World machine, but you’ll need a decent PC if you don’t want to use tiled rendering to generate the maps (tiled rendering can create artefacts).
I can personally confirm world machine works just fine for 128 000 X 128 000 maps (heightmaps, colormaps normal maps generation)
holy god 128k by 128k?? I have a decent pc
The issue you’ll run into is ram for very large resolution. 64gb was only enough for trivial graphs at 128k. But at 8k you shouldn’t have any issues
Yeah I couldn’t imagine something as big as 128k. But in the range from 8-16k I could see some good stuff happening. $90 though dayam. I would have to be able to somehow see some good auto generated environments from this thing on that scale working in unity before I paid for it. You say you have it?
Yea i own it it rocks, really user friendly. Just download the free version (resolution limited) so you can see how it works
513x513 though. I would want to test with something bigger… Can I PM you?
Sure, but really test wise 512 should help you see how it works, after that just need to buy a regenerate high resolution.
After making an 8k texture, I dont even want to pretend to imagine how intense an 128kx128k map would be…
