Yeehaa, I actually won something! Out of creativity!
So if I read correctly, those who already have a Unity Indie license can transfer their 9 month license, correct? So what do YOU think a 9 month indie license is worth?
Does OTEE ever grant 9 month licenses outside competitions?
Though we aren’t particularly enforcing it, the trial licenses are supposed to be for personal use: allowing the participants to go on working on their creations.
This sounds rather sketchy to me. I don’t think the 9 month license is transferrable. I think it was more meant for new users who actually took the time to create something for the contest to continue to explore the features of Unity for a greater period of time. I think all current Unity owners who entered the contest and have no use for the 9 month license should’ve won a Unity t-shirt though… or at least a Unity mouse pad
Okay so I was wrong. Sorry, I thought I won something transferable.
From the rules page:
Are the prizes transferable to a third-party?
If you already hold a valid Unity Pro or Indie license, you may transfer ownership of your prize. If you do not own a valid Unity Pro or Indie license then your Unity prize is non transferable. The ATI video card prize is transferable.
No hang on, I did!
If it makes you guys uncomfortable I’ll consider giving it to my school, I suppose, though I did compete to win something, and hoped to turn a lot of develpoment time into something real (like food)

I think that was in regards to the top 3 prizes that won a permanent Pro or Indie license. So Forest, Matt, and Matthew could I guess sell their newly won licenses. Or better yet, like you suggested, donate them to an educational party or some starving artist that can’t afford a license.
I guess Id like some solid clarification on this then. I kinda feel mislead, knowing I had a fairly good chance of having something to show for the time I’d put in…
Well every single entry “won” the 9 month license. It was an incentive to try out Unity for a longer period of time as a game developer, not to cash in on a monetary prize. For instance, if every entry won a true monetarily transferrable prize I would’ve entered every single silly half finished game I have going and reaped the benefits of the multiple “9 month licenses” I could sell under different entry names. That’s unethical and is why tranferring even a single contest entry 9 month license is a little sketchy.
I’d stop focussing on the monetary prize reward and instead appreciate the reward of finishing a game and getting all the valuable feedback from the community… that’s how I look at it at least.
I don’t think anyone would have any problem with you transferring the license to someone you personally were working with. So perhaps you could use it to attract some other talent to your projects? An artist who might enjoy dropping in their own artwork or models on-the-fly, for instance.
Hey David it doesnt say anything about a 9 month “trial” in the rules of entry, it just says if Its good enough to be accepted as an entry, the entrant recieves a 9 month indie license…
So owners of Unity Indie dont recieve anything for qualifying? thats a bit dodgy isnt it?
What a waste of time for anyone who was serious and read these bits:[/quote]
Can I get an official word here? I didnt enter just for fun, I worked my ass off in 40 hour shifts to win something of value

Sounds like that meets the competition guidelines, and it sounds good to me…

I know, what a sham…
Oh was it? I didnt read that any where. how did you know that? Nor did I read anywhere that if you owned unity indie you werent eligible for the qualification reward. Its a complete sham that everything and anything was good enough for this competition. I could’ve saved a lot of time, and, the only reason I am shelling out for the internet/webspace at the moment is that competition…

Ohhh, I get warm and fuzzy all over…
Speak for yourself. I entered to win. To beat you and Yoggy (ha ha!) thats what competitions about, isnt it? I’m glad Yoggy won-truly, and I’m really happy to settle for the qualification reward/prize/carrot/trial, whatever you want to call it.
If its all for fun and talk, why have prizes? The feed back doesnt mean anything to me, I know where the faults are, and people here are great at pointing that out too. In fact the judges generally didnt even address the faults in my entry.
I dont mean to be bitter, but I dont handle deceit very well. Does anybody?
Standing by for clarification thanks, as Im considering pulling down my entry, and wish to act soon…

Sounds like the spirit of the rules differ from the text of the rules in this case. To you as a contest entrant you don’t really know what the spirit behind things is/was so it’s not fair to hold you to that, instead it’s the letter of the rules we should hold you to and as such David offered his thoughts above. Oh well, just means we’ll have to do a better job writing the rules in the future.
Thank you. I hate coming across as an asshole, but I honestly worked really hardcore over this one. (Too much for my own good perhaps).
I was trying to win to transmorgify the winnings into payment for a medical operation for someone I care about (not kidding) so I probably invested too much emotional capital in this. I didnt want it to be for nothing as I truly read the rules different to the spirit of it all. Im sorry I caused a stir. Im well aware of my"full-on ness"…
I hope to figure out how to post stuff on the wiki as I have come up with a few really helpful scripts for new users. I may post the modified robot textures too-this is the least i can do…
Sorry again, I’ll ask a lot of questions first if theres other competitions, etc.

FYI, that’s not how you came across at all. At least not to me, so no worries there. You worked hard, you won a prize, you thought you could transfer that prize. You asked questions to clarify whether that was possible or not. We found some confusion between the spirit and the letter of the rules, we went with how the rule is written which suits you better anyway. Nothing asshole-like in that at all.
Didn’t mean to piss you off Aaron by inferring that you were trying to bilk the system or anything. I apologize for that, sometimes I have too much of a relaxed attitude towards things and don’t take into account other people’s convictions… no hard feelings I hope.
Maybe Aaron, this would have been better said in private email with David than in public forums. That way new visitors don’t form an erroneous impression of David and OTEE’s morals and conduct.
If David was to completely blow you off in email, or be rude or whatever, then maybe ask in public. But not as a first action.
