hello all! I am quite an arty person as well as hyper imaginative and I am always thinking up new video games in my little head that I wish were real, so ive taken the challenge of making a game!
I have a few questions I would really like answering (I cant find the FAQ for some reason), so if you would be kind enough please give me a helping hand!
Q1.Is Unity easy to get a grip on and learn with in several months (I’m thinking 6-8 months)?
Q2.If i use the free version can i still sell a game? (I’m not really planning on doing so but it would be a shame if it was to become succesful and I lost out on a few quid).
Q3.Are there any useful page or Youtube channels to help me along?
Q4. Do I have to rig my own chracter models etc. or can i get them from the community?
Q5. Do I need any experience in coding or programing to get by in this?
My apologies if these questions are easily found on the internet I just havent found the time to do such things at the moment!
Sorry also for any grammer mistakes unfortunately im not amazing at english.
Hey! You seem really fired up with learning to make games, that’s always nice to hear. I just jumped to Unity a few months ago (I used XNA previously) too, so I’m not expert, but here’s what I know:
1- You said get a grip on, so yes. You can definitely get a grip on Unity in 6-8 months. I’m talking about working with the interface and learning the principles about how things are done. Now…If you want to develop a full game by yourself, and by Question4 I assume it has some characters and complexity to it, then I can say hands down that you will most certainly not FINISH a slightly complex game in 8 months without previous coding skills.
2- Long story short: Yes.
3- Thousands of them, this community being one the best, if not the best actually. If you’re really new to scripting, “I’d buy Unity 3.x game development essentials”. It’s good for the complete starter (just the tip of the iceberg though". As fafase said, unitygems.com has some “must read” articles. Go and give them a look.
4- You can buy a massive amount of stuff in the asset store, at a very reasonable price.
5- You will need programming experience to use Unity, of course, but that doesn’t mean that if you don’t have it, you can’t acquire it. Today’s a perfect day to start ;).
Good luck mate, feel free to write me a private message / email, I’m starting with unity too, maybe we can share some ideas.
