Here is my first attempt at creating a better tiling ground texture fore use as a base terrain texture.
As i create more i’ll post them here.

looks much nicer
(also may I suggest a friendlier host, such as dropbox/box.net/google sites :))
Pretty good, but you lose the large scale variation. Ideally you want a shader that uses a detail texture and a larger base texture (that may cover 100x100m), but that’s not in the included Unity terrain shaders.
Looks good! Definitely can’t notice any tiling effects, which is a big problem with the current provided grass.
its nice, in the short and middle range, but in long range both are inadequate. I remember oblivion now
there were fixes which made the distant hills and mountains look better. I just wonder how we do that…
One thing Oblivion did was to bake not just the textures, but the trees and features into the distant texture, so a mountain would still appear to have lots of variations on it.
You could probably do the same thing in Unity using render textures or something (you’d have to make sure Unity didn’t overwrite them!).
That’s basically what you want to do. It works very well on Unity terrain textures, I’ve done it a bit.
@Tom this gamasutra tutorial is about editing textures, so do you mean we edit it like this after we generate the terrain maps somehow?
Edit the terrain textures that you use in the terrain, so the grass.png etc. files. Not sure if that’s clear enough regarding what I mean?
ah ok, you were talking about the low high pass filters for the texture. ok
thank you
I tought there was some sort of technique to apply to the terrain as a secondary layer, for making appealing distant views
Thank you ![]()
Wow awesome texture! ![]()
