Tried to download Unity 2018.0 beta 5, it fails to complete download in first attempt. Finishes downloading it in second attempt. Then it hangs forever with “Installing…” - no progress bar, nothing.

1- Our next update will feature a logging system to debug this kind of error.
2- Choosing the install path is planned for a later release but is in the works.
To find the log files you can check here:
Windows: %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\UnityHub\logs
Mac: ~/Library/Application support/UnityHub/logs
And regarding the crash, can you check if there is another instance hub of running (maybe in another user) or any other application that is listening on port 39000?
We have a limitation in the current version of hub that it needs to have this port free
