I’m looking for an external hard drive. I primary want to use it as a media storage device. Normally, as for backup purposes for instance, i tend to buy good harddrives and plug them into an chassis. This has proofen to be a reliable but also more expensive solution. This week i saw that they were firing out the maxtor one touch 500gb and so i was wondering how well this one is.
Anyone here with some experience on this device like: How loud is the hard drive (idle, access)? Does it heat up? Any crashes so far or other weird behaviours?
Can you recommend any other device for such a usage at pc and mac. Preferable with both a firewire and an usb connection?
I actually use that Maxtor 500gb external. Its great. I use it with Leopard and Vista via Boot Camp. Just format it to Fat-32 and everything is fine. Its pretty quiet too. It has usb and firewire, and it doesn’t heat up. It comes with driver software, but it worked plug and play for me. I definitely recommend it. Its not an eyesore either.
Hi, can you say which version you’re exactly using? Is it a 3 a 4 or a 4 plus? The one they are selling here is a 4. So there is no disturbing high frequency whilst the drive is running? I don’t know how to trust Maxtor after Seagate got them, the last Maxtor i had was a 60MB drive in my A4000/40. ;O)
It is a Maxtor One Touch 3. And upon closer inspection mine’s 300gb not 500gb. Oh well, I’ll never use that much anyways. I don’t notice any disturbing high frequency, and my dogs haven’t complained yet. I had a maxtor before seagate and after and I don’t see a difference in quality. Except my old maxtor was built like a sherman tank, and the new one is plastic. Okay, so maybe I do see a difference in quality.
Traditionally buying an internal drive+external enclosure has been cheaper than buying an external drive. It’s an odd period right now, though - drives like the one you want are for whatever reason being sold considerably cheaper than their internal counterparts (or at least, they were on Black Friday). Now is a very good time to buy an external.
Okay thanks, i guess i’ll just walk to the store, try to fill my brain with emptyness, stare at the pile of drives for some minutes and then act out of the stomach.
I have a Lacie with 1TB, its great. It has both firewire speeds, and USB, I know you can get it with wireless but it was on backorder for a month when I tried to order it and I lost patience. Once it is set up it has some pretty sweet little features like one button backup. it runs 7200, which is a must if you are planing to run games from it, imo.
Hi, it seems to that it’s coming with active cooling and that you can only use one interface at a given time. How loud is it? Also there is no power switch, right?
I’ve dropped the idea of getting a Maxtor One touch and am thinking of a Pleiades Super S-Combo plus a S-ATA-Seagate. I’ve made good experiences with IBM/Hitachi drives since a long time but they had some fluctuation with the quality some years ago. Seagate also makes reliable ones, not so silent as IBM drives but reliable and they give you a five year warranty.
