A programmers TV channel

As I lay in bed and watched TV last night I’ve wondered why aren’t their any TV shows I can watch about programming or game development… There should be a channel dedicated to all things programming, web development, software development game development… All kinds of programmers from learning shows to best practices and tips n tricks from other programmers and so much more…

I would love to watch this TV channel and I was wondering how many others would like a channel like this? Do you have any ideas for such a channel?

Unless the programmers get drunk and start fights with each other, the general public probably wouldn’t be interested.

Believe it or not there are many programmers out there who would enjoy it. IMO. how do infomercial channels get air time but something like this wouldnt?

You don’t even need alcohol; just split a group of programmers into two teams, each with their own naming and capitalisation conventions, and watch the violence ensue.

C# vs US… FIGHT!

Wanna bet? Take a page out of History or Discovery Channel or, hell, any one of those Home Improvement shows and get some good looking people to host it, talk animatedly about it and use the computer animations. If people watch a show about two strangers renting an apartment in a city you’ve never heard of, the I am sure people would watch it. We’re living in the days of nearly infinite TV programs. Hell, I’d rather watch a show about computer programming than most sports or reality TV. Of course, you could always make it a competition. Iron Programmer.

Finally a real answer… Yeah I honestly think something like this would work… ever seen the movie hackers? Remember the TV show they had in the movie?

Bring on Game Jam TV!

Isn’t that what YouTube and the web is for, TV is old outdated scheduled stuff, we need on demand and live content, interactive content.

I agree. Just don’t expect huge audiences but it could hold it’s own against “How the States Got their Shapes” or “Way Too Many Kids and Still Popping Them Out”. There is already the Science Channel. Pitch it to them.

Why not just create a youtube channel that we all can use and share and upload tutorials/tips/etc to it? I think that would be a fairly great idea as we’d spread a lot of knowledge that we all have with programming and/or modeling with Unity. I’d personally go for that.

Maybe your TV is outdated, but mine has about a million things to watch on demand including movies that are still playing in the theater and that’s not even talking about the fact that my TV HAS internet.

I think that it would be really fun to have some sort of show like “The Office” made by Ricky Gervais. Something that would put real working space of development team (not just programmers) into show, which means not full realtime stream, but just cuts of development with comedic lines.
It would work really well if there would be lot of sarcasm for example like, there could be one programming guy without any knowledge being there just becouse comapny didnt had anyone else to put in and he would walk to other programmer while working on fluid simulation for game, asking like: Hey whats variable again? And then the other programmer makes that camera look like in the Office, Or there could be some music guy always wanting to put his own music into game and noone in team would agree with it (extreme music genre), and then he could always try to explain it rationally why it would make sense to include that kind of music, even that it would make sense it would be obvious that it would ruin the game. Or then there could be two artist guys always playing games instead of working, and always switching from game to 3d modeling software when boss would show up. And maybe somethimes there would be some famous developer comming arround from huge titles and noone would know him, and they would all doubt at everything what he says. You know basically environment of some barelly going company.

I think it’s a good idea but I don’t see it happening on tv… but as a video feed on the internet it could be good.

Thats an idea i’ve never been a big fan of the office but I’m talking about a whole TV channel for shows like this and serious shows… for many different languages may different aspects of development… that are both educational and informative but also shows where u can watch development of games have real lessons being taught… I see it being very popular and will help more people understand how games are made. Its basically a TV channel like USA but for nerds that shows only stuff that has to do with game development/web development/software development from the design to the programming… I dunno I imagine this being possible but someone would have to be willing to spend the money for the channel n then shows would have to start being made… maybe if i was a billionaire i’d pay for the start of something like this…

That is sooooo boring, Finally! I can be a star!, but I’d watch that before infomercials. Currently I only get FTA and therefore only the local PBS station and I’ll puke if they continue one more year rotating through the Civil War, Word War I, and Word War II. Odd how they fixate on the history they have gruesome pictures of ain’t it?

But back o the nerd channel. Good looks has less to do with those kind of successful shows than nice personalities helping others. I like shows like Ground Force, Trinny Susan’s What not to Wear, Changing Rooms, and The Life Laundry. Entertaining shows where the show hosts would go help normal people in a very sympathetic way.

I’ve never watched the Jersey Shore or these other reality shows that are supposed to be very entertaining.

If you like the ‘Office’ then ‘People Like Us’ is a mockumentary that is better.

start small.

You dont need to be billionaire to start something like this, you just need good script and some decent actor to start with.

Youtube video series with 1 milion views per episode can be just as good as as some medium successful tv show (for creators), and its way easier to enter on youtube thatn tv.

America’s Funniest VB Programmers

You’ve just started my TV empire! Trufax!

I’ve wondered why there isn’t at least a game development reality show. It can be done well I think, just look at Indie Game The Movie. Do it similar to that, a little slower paced, with comments from more developers, etc, and you’ve got yourself a pretty drama intense TV show. Of course, now that G4 will no longer exist, broadcast is mostly out of the picture. But I can see it doing well in web space and being picked up eventually if it’s good enough.

G4 used to be TechTV with computer stuff so adding programming wouldn’t be that difficult. I used to write out plans on how I would change G4 when all the Comcast, cancellations and sales rumors popped up 2-3 years ago. Had whole yearly programming schedules ready to go but could never find a way in the door as programming director.

Though a show about programming would be pretty dry…
