Hi, a friend and I are working on a small project and we want to create an island about the size of Hawaii. We have a few questions about doing this.
We want to do this as a single terrain and single scene, is this unrealistic? If so, what is a realistic size island?
It seems common that 1 terrain unit is 1 meter so a default terrain size of 2000 x 2000 is 4,000,000 meters squared. If we say that for our scene 1 terrain unit is also 1 meter we would need a massively huge terrain or learn to stitch them together and use many of them, something we would like to avoid.
any direct answers and links to relevant forum post greatly appreciated. (yeah I been searching for while and still havent really found an answer.)
You can’t use anything higher than 2049x2049 for a single heightmap (it should 4097x4097, but that doesn’t seem to be working). You can make an island the size of Hawaii in a single terrain, but it’s going to have a much lower resolution than 1 meter. If you want 1 unit = 1 meter, then you have to use many terrains.
Fran our end goal is to create an MMO type of game but we are new to this and need to learn stuff along the way. Part of my task is to make sure we arent spending a lot of time on stuff that does not apply directly to our long term goals. So our goal for now is to make a single player island to learn all we can from that but would like the 100s or 1000s of hours we spend on it to be a base of our eventual MMO goal.
I need to know what is realistic size for an MMO. Size of terrain, a better understanding of resolution on the terrain, etc. I am still coming up short on a lot of this
Our first island may be only 1/10th the size of hawaii but using the 4000+ square miles of hawaii gives me an idea of size means in terrain resolution settings and I will need to still understand the other settings below the length/height/width and how they all play into this.
My questions surely show off how little I actually know :-/ I am hopping for some links to threads that go deep into my questions and a link to one or more packages I could download where I actually can follow a thread about it would help us a ton.
