A question on making money with casual games.

Hey

So I’ve been making a classic mario HD game (where it only allows you to go sideways) with unity for past few days. It seems so simple when it’s not multiplayer and it’s the first SP that I’ve ever been making

So anyway, I’ve currently got a simple land and a fully animated mario and some more things.

a small pic:

Do not mind the GUI, I only added simple gui texture and gui text so it would look more like mario game

Anyways, so if I manage to finish this “game”, would I be able to make any money with it?
I read somewhere on unity site, that casual games like these can bring 40-100k annually if they’re popular, but I never been interested in these kind of games before and i don’t know how it works…

Do you request the game to be put on some “free online gaming” websites? What are the best websites for that? How exactly do I make money after putting the game on that website?

I might create a showcase WIP topic with a webplayer version and some screenies of the game over the weekend if everything goes well. Adding the collectibles and npcs now.

thanks

No…after Nintendo’s lawyers are done, you’ll probably be homeless…

aw, i guess it’s a waste of time making the game then

But why? I’ve seen many mario games on Wii, Gamecube as well as PC :o
Lots of PC ones are created by Fans of the mario and they seem to be quite popular…

Except for PC games, Nintendo made them. They can do what they like with their own intellectual property. I’d suggest reading this.

If you do free fan games, you’re less likely to be noticed, though technically Nintendo is within their rights to shut those down too, if they wanted to go through the bother of doing so. Any hint of trying to profit off of someone else’s property, though, will get you in trouble. Back in the day, Nintendo even got Great Giana Sisters shut down, and that was just a clone of the Mario Brothers gameplay; it didn’t actually have Mario in it.

Yes, but I’m not going to say like “hey this is my idea, my own game, i created mario!” etc. It will be specified that it’s mario is property of Nintendo and that this is just a fan game.
I won’t be selling it like you sell normal games, but it will be free to play on a website with webplayer build and um… i dont know, maybe some adds placed on same page so it would bring me some money if someone clicks the add, but generally I wouldn’t be making money off the game because it would be free.

I perfectly understand why that Great Giana Sisters game was shat down, because it has nearly same gameplay as mario and it wasn’t some “fan game”, they didn’t specify anything that it’s a game like mario or game with gameplay of mario, they claimed that whole game and ideas of gameplay was theirs and not Nintendo’s mario, therefore it was shat down.

I’m not gonna be “selling” this game or anything, all I want is make a simple web build and put on some websites to play for free :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks

So basically, you want to earn money but not earn money at the same time, or else nintendo destroys your life… :stuck_out_tongue:

hehe
Well I’m literally not going to make any money off a game itself, just having few adds on a page where the game is ran isn’t making me any money off the game ;D

ahh we’ll see, this is just a simple project for learning anyways lol.

Copyright issues aside, this is not a casual game. Pop over to BigFishGames or RealArcade. Those are casual games.

Dude why is it that everything I see you doing in these forums is copyright infringing? Why can’t you just create your own ideas instead of stealing others?

No its not… just change the art to something you create from your OWN creativity or pay someone to create a concept. Then you can make money from selling it and from your adds.

Hint: Just turn it into Maria-O Sisters and you’re golden.

@Wadoman
That is the whole point of this project lol, I want to recreate a classic pc mario.
To be more precise, this mario:
http://www.wieringsoftware.nl/mario/

As you can see it is not made by Nintendo, it’s a fan game as well and it’s still quite popular from 1994 since it’s probably the only decent mario on PC ;D

There’s a huge difference between cloning a game for the sake of learning a language (no money making attempts) and cloning a game to make money off of it. Your thread title is about making money with casual games and you then start it off by showing a direct clone of someone else’s legal property.

I’m making the game for learning purposes, but I created this topic to ask whether I would be able to make any money of it once it’s finished.

Then you know the answer: no, doing so would be illegal.

ah k, I’ll then just put the game up on a web so friends could come and play when they want :stuck_out_tongue:

EDIT:
while you’re here HiggyB, I’ll ask a quick question…
I’m making it so when the mario hits a floating block, then block will play a simple animation of going up and back down like it is in real mario.

I’m trying to use the unity’s built in animation editor, but when i make a simple animation for one box which changes it’s position y up and down quickly and then try to apply same anim for other boxes of same type, it transforms those other boxes to a position of the first box where animation was made
What am I doing wrong? Or it will always be like that what ever i try with unity’s built in animation editor?

thanks

That’s bad forum etiquette as your question is (a) in the wrong forum and (b) buried in a thread on a different topic hiding it from future eyeballs. Post a new thread in the right forum (Support) and folks can help out there.

ehh k, I didn’t want to spam the forum with new topics so I thought I’ll post here.

I’ll give new topic a shot then. It will probably take few years till somebody answers but I’ll try

My advice to you (and to others who wish to make clone/fan-games) is contact the company that owns the rights to the IP (intellectual property).

Tell them your intentions (be completely honest with them), and ask for their permission.

Chances are if you intend to make any money off of it (even through web page ads) they will most likely say no.

But if its simply a free game (that is not a complete copy of their game~~) then there is a chance they will give you an okay. But always, always! have it in writing before even starting. (That way it saves you from many legal headaches in the end).~~
Also be aware that if they give you the okay, they will most likely impose certain restrictions of what can or cannot be done, and/or may want to see the finished product before release, or periodic submission of what you have done during regular intervals. (They can also say stop what you are doing at any point if they dont like what they see, and if they feel it hurts the image of the IP in any way).
