Hi, I just have a quick question regarding Unity Pro and Free.
A bit of background:
I am working with an artist on a game that we will likely attempt to sell. He’s doing the art, and I’m doing everything else. Assuming the game is successful, I plan on using the money earned to purchase a Pro license. After doing so, I’d like use the pro features to enhance the game.
My question is: will the artist also have to buy Unity Pro? I know that:
However, he is developing all his content with Z-brush, blender, and other apps that are not Unity- the only reason he may use Unity is to preview a model. All he is doing is sending me the .blend files and textures- no unity packages.
From my understanding, If he uses Unity only to check the result of his modelling and does not actually work on the same unity project (the one you are working on your pro) then It should be fine.
It doesn’t apply to your artist because although your artist is working on the same project, he’s not working on the same “Unity” project. Otherwise every people offering services to model would have to buy pro just to preview if their work looks okay or not. Would not make sense.
Plus he doesn’t develop content with Unity like in that quote so again it should be more than ok. However, if you take that literally, the asset store is an infringement on that quote/statement because there are asset store sellers who have pro but the tool/models/kit/animation/you-name-it they sell is used in a game made with free, therefore mixing free with pro !
To me it sounds like they rather want to avoid is something like: There’s 10 guys in the team; 9 using free while 1 has pro but they are working on the same exact Unity project !
I can definitely see that your last example is what their trying to stop, but I’m not sure whether or not I’m going to be swept under the rug as well. And, that’s a pretty interesting observation regarding the asset store.
