I just set up Unity (Christmas came early), but before i cut my teeth on it (or try and fail) I wanted to know. I know unity can make 2d games, but I wanted to make something less Mario and more Streets of Rage (the 1st one, no one should make 3 again…ever). Is unity a good fit for this or should I look elsewhere and if so where?

Technically there is not much difference between a mario style 2d game, and a streets of rage style 2d game… Gameplay is different, but in the end of the day, these are just sprites interacting with each other according to some rules, so…

Unity is not the most obvious choice for 2d games, but if it was good enough for Rovio, then perhaps it is good enough to the rest of us…

Since we are developing a 2D game I can assure you that using Unity (with certain plugins) is a great choice in fact.

Here is a tutorial that someone on the forum linked me to [http://walkerboystudio.com/html/unity\_course\_start\_here\_\_free\_.html](http://walkerboystudio.com/html/unity_course_start_here__free_.html) it teaches you unity and how to make 2D and 3D games might help you.
