I am making a character that has many different arm armors, chest pieces, helmets, and leg armors. My idea is to make a standard rig but build the character in multiple pieces to be switched when the player changes a specific piece of armor. Think Destiny. Gears of War also worked in a similar way.
The character never changes in build or height so the animations should transfer across with the rig when pieces are switched. I just don’t know how to implement this in unity or if it is possible.
I am rigging with Mixamo but I am not opposed to rigging in CAT or biped in max if necessary for a helper rig or something.
The reason I am trying to make this method work is so I can utilize my UV’s more efficiently and keep the pieces higher res without sacrificing UV space trying to pack the whole thing into one UV. ie every armor piece for the armors gets as much UV space as the helmets. Doing this means you get to see all those beautiful scratches I painstakingly paint on my textures.
