I spent hours looking at ways to get that atmospheric halo effect. The posted stuff, while awesome looking was over my head, and I couldn’t get this to work. I went super-low-tech and made a bowl with flared edges that points at the camera. I know, the bump mapping is way too high and the specular ocean is not realistic. What can I say, it’s free and simple, enjoy.
Yes, it will stop people from using it; Max files are unusable unless you have Max installed.

Let me start by thanking you for making and sharing this! =) However, a .max file is very inconvenient for anyone who doesn’t have the program (which automatically excludes Mac users). Could you perhaps consider releasing a .zip with a .fbx, .obj + .mtl and a CC-license or something to that extend? That way I also wouldn’t feel guilty if I found this somewhere and used it, not knowing if it was meant to be free to use or not. =P
Thanks for the feedback, I think I have this correct now using an FBX exported file instead. I’m not entirely sure I was able to swap the package in the original post the way I think. If anyone finds it to be in error just post about it, I’ll come back around at some point.
Oh yeah, Senshi (and all) this is free and clear, make a million bucks and say it was all your idea!
Yep, that worked. The planet object has a missing script, but it doesn’t seem to affect anything.

doh! that was just the Gravity script from the wiki.
