A Unity Still: Forest Path

Took around 15 minutes to wip up. Mostly done with the terrain engine with rays of light made in blender. Hope you enjoy!

The dark parts of the light rays break the illusion for me.

Cheers,

I kinda liked it that way

it wasn’t the dark parts for me, but that’s what I thought at first. I think the problem is the inconsistency. You have a smooth blend of shadow and light, and then you have sharp edges to the rays.

Does this look any better?

I remember a similar post a while back which discussed techniques for creating light-beams - a warehouse with light-beams from the windows was the example project.

Can’t seem to find it though. Anyone remember?

I remember the posting, but I wouldn’t know how to look for it. Was a while back …

Sure, the light beams could use some work, but I like the whole thing overall. It looks like a video game - nothing looks real, but I get the impression of what you are trying to convey, and my brain fills in the details. So I think you’re doing a great job - off to a good start, certainly. I dig the composition of the scene, personally.

Great Work Alec! It gives one this good ole adventure-game feeling.

The brightness of the Lightbeams in the first picture is much better in my opinion. It gives more contrast to the picture. It just needs a smooth gradient fall-off to the sides as well as downwards.

I like it. I looks like somewhere I’d like to explore. I liked the first screenshot’s light rays better. And I think they would be even better if made more translucent and whiter.

thanks for your comments guys! I’ll keep tweaking the scene and posting my results.

Hi, congratulations Alec. Really like the the mood of the scene. How do you manage to get these light beams?

i would use additive shader for the light beams. (all the pros do… )

well, that or an expensive particle system.

I simply made the shape of the beam in Blender, UV mapped them with a yellow-ish colour in photoshop with fading endss and used a transparent shader to give the the “ray” look. It’s not performance busting, it’s quick and easy.

Many thanks for the tip. I saw this effect in some games and was wondering how to achieve something alike

warehouse thread? http://forum.unity3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=9729&highlight=warehouse

Presactly!

Hey there!

A nice concept you have there. But I have some minor feedback:

There’s stretching to the left and at the end of the image.
The lighting also definately need some work, try working with point lights and a light with a cookie to recreat the shadows of the leave. Then those beam look way too harsh and yellow. Sunlight isn’t really yellow. Also you could try to add a glow component to the camera to get a mysterious and gloomy picture if you fix above notes.

Good start anyway!

well I don’t have pro so image effects are a no-no. I have been experimenting with cookies in the scene but I only know how to make a spotlight cookie :frowning:
