Both are suitable - use wichever one you cann afford and/or like best.

You heard wrong. It makes zero difference. If it can export to FBX it’s good to go.
There is no better, it’s just a matter of preference.
Tons of folk will tell you otherwise (they’ll say one program is meant for films, one for animation, one for games) but it’s not true.
In the old days max was considered the “game modeler” because it had a good export pipeline. Maya was considered a movie app because it had renderman. These days max, maya, blender, xsi, they all do the same when it comes to game modeling.

Which program is best depends on what you’re most comfortable with and what you can afford.
If you choose Maya or 3D StudioMax, keep in mind that you cannot publish your game in Unity if your models are created with the student versions. You need to buy the full versions in order to do that and the full versions are over $3000 the last time I checked for both.
If money is an issue, Blender might be your best bet since it’s free. The learning curve is steep but once you start getting hang of the keyboard shortcuts, it’s an amazing program and on par with Maya/3DSMax.
