Classroom instruction does nothing for me. I like “how-to” books. I learn best through reading and I have uncountable volumes. So I know a good tutorial when I read it. Not to long ago I bought “Unity iOS Game Development Beginners Guide” by GregoryPierce and it astounds me at how bad it is. Numerous errors, incomplete examples, it tells you to declare private vars to hold GameObjects, then jumps to how to control that GameObject without ever assigning a game object to that private variable anywhere in the code.
Also the code for Chapter 1 is missing from the book’s website. GregoryPierce, the author has been promising for ever to upload the code but he never does.
The author of this book should shot for writing such a terrible book.
Was that by those Packt publishing guys? They’ll literally let anyone write a book, I know this, because I originally started writing this book and about a month in, changed my mind. I’m glad to know the end result was terrible
Yeah, from Packt. I got as far as Chapter 7 and hit a brick wall. It’s been a fight to get this far. I’m new to Unity but thanks to my previous experience I could figure out what was wrong and what was missing. But now nothing I do will get my little solder animating. This book as absolutely ridiculous. Even the code for the book is just what comes with the Assets he tells you to download. Unbelievable. Over the last 30 years I must have read over 50 programming, AI, and game dev books and never have I read one so bad as this.
Hey. I just went to your Binary Mill website and I see Mini Motor Racing on it. I have it on my iPad and it’s one of the best top-down racers out there and one of my favorites. A great game! Did you develop that? Was it done in Unity?
As an aside, Before I started on the awful “Unity iOS Game Development Beginners Guide” by Gregory Pierce, I completed “Unity 3.X Game Development Essentials” by Will Goldstone. It’s also published by Packt, but it is one of the finest “how to” books I’ve ever read. A great book! The only reason I could make it to Chapter 7 of the former book is because I had 1st read the latter book.
Probably. Even dumb guys like me can program. That’s why most geeks amuse me. They think of themselves as smarter than the average Joe just because they can program a computer. Actually anyone can do that. All it takes is the desire and a bit of effort.
