Hello everyone i’ve had a bit of a problem in the last couple of days with terrain. We all know the default terrain editor in Unity3d sucks, but I’ve used many other terrain editors much like Gaia, and Terrain Composers even the Terrain toolkit that has been coming up every once and a while in a thread on here. But I’ve had experimented with all of them and can not seem to find the style I want. I’m wanting a 10,000 x 10,000 terrain with realistic mountains and plain biome kinda areas. I’ve also used world machine and found that the terrain is very hard to sculpt with that piece of software. Does anyone know any other ideas or tips I should be following the get realistic terrain thank you for all the time you took to read this and hopefully help me out thanks!
Search for other terrain based generators, they may suit more than World Machine… Another thing you could do is create your own normal maps / colour ID’s (for texturing) for use with segments. Issue is that will take a fair amount of time to do… Although it’s very effective.
For mountains you could use an asset from the store like this: Unity Asset Store - The Best Assets for Game Making
Actually the Unity3D terrain system is pretty advanced (and also pretty sucky). Watch some level design videos on YouTube and see what people can do with it. Actually it can make pretty impressive results.
l3dt is in my opinion a good program BUT all the technology and awesome programs or assets won’t help you much, without the knowledge what makes a terrain look realistic.
You need to get a little into geology and topography research the kind of terrain, find out where those places in real life are, what climate you want, how mountains transition to forests/grass/plains. Is it a volcanic mountain you want?or are those mountains created and affected by other kinds of earthcrust movements?
Of course you don’t necessarily need to know every little detail on why and how, but atleast finding reference material from the real world and observe those images from different angles, can bring you a long way in recreating something new and realistic.
practically, the moment you understand some basic concepts of how terrain is forming, you will be able to make realistic terrains even just with unitys terrain creator
Hi, I am the author of Gaia, and I suppose you could say I have a bit of a thing for terrain
If you really want real world terrain then check the video below. It shows how to get real world terrain into Gaia and from Gaia into Unity. A bunch of the stamps that come with Gaia are actually based on real world satellite scans.
However as others have said, there is a fair bit involved in getting a natural realistic environment. You need to study the environment you want to create, then make sure you have matching textures, rocks, grasses and plants for that environment. Then - you need to make sure that its actually playable from a game perspective, and that you have created it in a way that Unity can actually render it at an acceptable frame rate.
And finally, even after you have cracked all that its still going to look average until you light it correctly, and that’s another whole level of challenge
You could check World Creator which is a procedural terrain and landscape generator - here is the web-site where you can see all features and some nice videos also: www.world-creator.com
You can create absolutely realistic terrains and different biomes on a single map - woth checking - if you have any further question just write a mail to support@bitethebytes.com
I know you mentioned Terrain Composer, but check out the latest video for Terrain Composer 2. You might be surprised. It seems like it would be especially suited for a large area like that with multiple biomes. It’s not even in beta yet, but it’s something to be aware of.
I am sorry everyone that I have no replied to I havn’t been on at all for a couple of months im back and working on my game thanks everyone for there suggestions.
Why the grass from unity eating all cpu?
Open your own thread and please be descriptive so others know what’s going on.
