Hey everyone.
Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if there are any other people who also spend way too much time learning and making new stuff in unity…
It all started on a warm sunny day, i was tired of having the same old fps, open world game over and over again… I was browsing the internet, when i saw ‘make your own games the way you like with unity’ (or some sh*t like that:face_with_spiral_eyes:)
This was interesting, very interesting… so i downloaded the unity free version and started learning the way unity works and programming… all of that stuff. Now that i got the hang of how unity works and what i can do with it, i’m… ADDICTED!!!
So, anyone else addicted to unity and just messing around with all of this??
I’ve been addicted for about 2 years, in that time I must say there aren’t many games that deterred me away from it. I played a few hours of Kerbal Space Program, a few days of AC Black Flag, GTA V and around christmas I was playing a lot of AC Unity.
And I used to be an avid gamer, but now I just want to work on my game. When I first picked up unity I was having loads of fun just fooling around but since May 2013 I’ve just been working on one project and I’m unable to get bored of it.
Yeah, I’m in the same boat. It’s hard for me to enjoy my favorite games anymore without comparing them to my own or thinking about new features to add. Game dev is infinitely more fun and rewarding than playing them.
^Same for me. I seldom play anymore because there’s always something I think is missing from it, and since I started coding I actually know how it could be added so I spend more time creating the games I dream of instead of playing existing ones that are lacking
It is very refreshing to see this thread. I have shared your game dev addiction for about 30 years or so. The machine doesn’t matter. It was as enjoyable when I first started as it is now. Of course I am making the same kind of things so that is a big part of it. Lol
Anyway awesome post focusing on game dev as a passion in and of itself. Thanks for doing it.
I’m with you on that. When I first started with game development I was playing several other games. One year in and I was playing only one game still. Another year in and I don’t play any games anymore. Pretty much all I do is program. Heck, I don’t even participate in the various social activities that humans tend to take part in… none interest me.
Yeah, gamedev is better then playing games. I haven’t actually played Pillars of Eternity and Dark Souls 2(I’m a hardcore RPG fan) yet, because I prefer to spent time coding in Unity :]
Think about it, where does Unity get it’s money from? Licences and the asset store. From people starting to develop games, and from people in the process of developing games. Nothing at all from completed games.
So Unity is incentivised to make game development itself fun and exciting.
Yeah, a buddy of mine keeps telling me about how awesome “new game X” is and I keep saying, but I don’t have time to do that, that would take away from MY game development. He usually says “I’ll stick with games made with multi-million dollar budgets”, I usually respond that I’m playing the best god game ever made where there are no cheat codes and the logic puzzles are really hard. He doesn’t get it.
Probably like everyone else here, I’ve dreamt about making games for, well, forever. I started getting serious about learning C# since October of 2014. I’m finally able to use my skills to create a simple NPC that can do things like sense hunger or it’s time for bed. I’m having a lot of fun trying stuff and thinking about problem solving in very abstract ways to do simple things.
Unity has definitely become my main hobby currently. I even go to my friend’s place with my laptop, get inebriated, and just experiment in C# gameobjects and scripts. Good times.
I consider there to be quite a difference between playing games and making games. One is like painting by numbers and the other is like adding to a blank canvas. 3D is the lure for me… length, breadth, and depth. I have a long standing addiction.
100% with OP. I play the odd game for ideas but def play with Unity more than game now LOL. Since finding Unity it has inspired me and my son to use and learn many diferent 3D technologies. Its a must for kids hes only 7yrs old and has made 3 games already
