Adding details to non-terrain map.

Hey guys, so I have a little map here, and what I want to do is how to add nice looking 3D grass and flower models to the map without it being process intensive. All ideas welcome even if not on topic.

The small white block at the bottom middle has a scale of 2x2x2. I’d like my grass and flowers to be roughly 0.5 blocks high. The reason why I’m asking for opinions is that i’ve tried to do this previously by making a bunch of 3D objects and make square grass that looked nice, however it was lagging the game a lot.

Picture doesn’t seem to work.
When it comes to grass I personally prefer using billboards, and am doing so in my game. The best tip I’ve found for producing nice looking, but “inexpensive” grass is to create “bent” planes arranged in an X-pattern.
I made an example in blender just to show what I mean.

By adding some shape to the planes you will prevent the ghastly flat look when viewed from above.

I’m not entirely sure what how you would apply that to a map. Would you be able to give an example where you’ve applied your ‘bent’ planes?

Here is what i want to make square stylized details for.

Ahh, now I can see the picture.
Is this the type of grass you are thinking about?

I threw this together really quickly just as an illustration of how it could be made (assuming this is in line with what you want). Obviously not as nice looking as the one on deviant art, but a low poly way to make something similar, also flexible if you want to add or remove planes depending on the camera view and how it looks in game.

(Don’t judge me for the hideous grass, I made this in five minutes :stuck_out_tongue: )

That looks great, although i want the grass to be more blocky :stuck_out_tongue:
