Adding MAC and Linux support

Hi guys, I have a quick question.

I have a game on Steam. It supports Windows only currently and few people have asked for MAC and Linux support. I don’t own a MAC nor have a Linux machine (I guess this isn’t hard) to test this…so figured I’d ask around.

How do I build for MAC or Linux? Under build settings, standalone says windows, mac and linux. Does this mean I can build on my windows machine and the game file will work in both linux and mac? Or do I have to build it on Mac/Linux to have it built for respective platforms?

Also my second questions is, are these builds (built for MAC/Linux) good enough in general that doesn’t require a MAC or Linux machine to QA for it separately or should I get em? Just asking since I have no experience with the two platforms.

Thanking you in advance,

There are some things like dx11 that aren’t supported, depending on shaders you are using there may a few minor issues.

You should test to be safe. You might find a friend to help you out with thier machine. Depending how much hope to make serving those markets, another somewhat inexpensive solution would be to buy a mid range Mac mini and set it up to dual boot into Linux. (Safer than virtualizing). That way you two for the price of one.

Note that proper distribution for a Mac requires code signing, which can be annoying. Also the Windows file system doesn’t have permission info that Mac and Linux use, so you may have to fiddle with file permissions on builds so they’ll run, which does require using the appropriate OS to do that as far as I know. (By the way, it’s just “Mac” as in “Macintosh”. MAC is an acronym that stands for Media Access Control, i.e. MAC address.)

Mac stands for Mouse Actuated Computer.

Silliness like this is why I refer to the platform by the current name of the operating system - macOS. :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe it should be a recursive acronym:

Macs Are Computers

I spent months trying to convince my sister to name her twins Maxwell and Natasha. Just so I could introduce them as Max & Tash. Unfortunately she didn’t listen to me :frowning:
