Addressables don't work in editor in fast mode (2021.2.0b13)

Hey, I’ve been stuck on this issue for a couple of days and I’m having a very hard time figuring out what’s going wrong. I’m all out of ideas.

Everything works fine on my end, but on other computers we’re getting errors when entering play mode (with Use Asset Database play mode script). This is even when we cleanly clone and reimport the project. Somehow the issue affects only some machines.

I tried different package versions (1.19.4, 1.18.15, 1.17.17, 1.16.16) and Unity versions (2021.2.0b13, 2022.1.0a9) to no avail.

The code that throws is super simple, it’s pretty much just an addressable scene load.

I narrowed the issue down to a problem with the order in which callbacks are executed when entering play mode. On my machine, the EditorApplication.playModeStateChanged callback (with PlayModeStateChange.ExitingEditMode) would fire before the first scene is loaded. On other machines, this callback would fire only after the scene is already loaded and scripts are already trying to use the addressables system.

I ended up implementing a workaround that comes down to manually calling the AddressablesBuildScriptHooks callback before I do anything else. This callback is used to properly set up the play mode build script.

This problem might be related to another play mode issue that affects the beta/alpha editor versions. See this thread:
