Adobe products - affordable subscriptions!

Hey everyone,

I’m not sure if this is old news, but I only just found out recently, but did you know that Adobe now has an extremely affordable subscription based plans for their products?

You can now subscribe to use Photoshop CS5 for as little as US$49 per month or for $US39 per month - for a year

There are also other plans for their other full lineup of products.

Has anyone used these subscriptions before? Are there any small prints? I’m finding it hard to believe that Photoshop is now this affordable - I’ve always assumed Photoshop was something I wouldn’t be able to afford easily.

This is an interesting find, thanks.

Nice find indeed

But affordable is a matter of definition as the price if you take the yearly is the same as an upgrade (which is once per 18 months or so) normally would cost, if you take monthly its even more expensive …
If you have no previous version naturally it rocks

There is a counter-article for why you shouldn’t go on the subscriptions here: http://www.infoworld.com/t/software-licensing/beware-adobes-new-subscription-pricing-540

But I don’t believe it (this article) applies to us indie game developers. Yes, outright purchase is always going to be cheaper in the long run, but realistically, how many of us actually have thousands of dollars to purchase retail?

This subscription service is a win in my books - at least until I can get enough of an income to actually afford outright purchase

Most agreed

Another way to look at it would be as a casual freelance artist. I occasionally do some web design work for clients for extra cash. I’ve been doing so maybe around 2 or 3 projects a year. If you aren’t going to be using the software as a main job, it’s perfect

I think it applies to indies even more as we normally have even less money and going with the “write off” normally does not apply to us as we don’t have the reserves to life by “writting investment off over XX months”
But the benefit of the subscription is if you need it for just a project and alike and don’t use it personally, then its definitely superior especially for indie.

Yeah that’s what I meant - I meant that article I linked to in my previous post doesn’t apply to indies

in that case you disagree and don’t mean the same thing cause I mean that the article applies even more to indies than big businesses as the finances are more restricted and indies normally don’t need to be “all up to date” so you can go 2-3 years with the same license before you need an upgrade in which case you save a lot of money over the subscription as the article points out too.

the only case where its beneficial for indies is if you only need it for projects that only take a few months a year at max and otherwise not, then subs work to your best.

After a little more that 1.5 years you’d have spent the same amount of money.
If you’re not going to use it for say something like half a year or a year only and then abandon it … it’s not worth it, IMO.

Only if you need many seats for a short amount of time. Then it’s very cool, IMO.

OR if you’re going to test it while also wanting to use the results commercially. Otherwise it’s a waste of money in the long run, I think.
With Adobe you can easily skip two or three version numberst in most programs. Even more now that they are relasing Point releases…

Signed, I’m on web premium CS 3(.3) and lack any really good reason to upgrade as the gain isn’t large enough to justify the costs.

More options == Good
