Hi! First post and I’m just going to dive in head first.
I’m a student at Drexel University and am in charge of a team of 8 people to create an adventure/point and click video game in 4 weeks. We have a bunch of skilled artists and writers, but only one person confident in Unity and a computer science major who isn’t sure of her abilities. These are the core mechanics of the game and please forgive me if my terminology is off:
Levels. Levels will are images that are loaded that represent an environment via 2D art assets. Aside from the thematic aspects of the levels all levels will also be loaded with the following:
-
Text Entry Field (TEF) - An area of the of the level that when clicked brings prompts a TEF to appear. When a TEF appears it automatically calls the prompt to appear within the TEF. It’s the TEF that will allow the player to enter keywords. When a player clicks outside of the TEF, this causes the TEF to disappear until it is invoked again by the same event that caused it to appear to begin with.
-
Keywords. Predesignated words that are loaded with each level. When all the given keywords are entered into the TEF for a given level, this would cue either the next Level be loaded or a transitional element (such as a cutscene that would in turn cue the loading of the next level).
-
Clues. Lines of static text that appear on the screen for several seconds after a certain amount of time has passed. They are designed to inform the player where to click in the level or what to enter in the TEF in order to complete the level.
-
Flashes. Flashes are images that are very briefly flashed onto the player’s screen (no longer than a quarter of a second). Ideally they would occur randomly (but rarely) as the game is played and when specific elements are clicked on by the player. Flashes serve to exemplify the darker thematics of the game. They will all be stylized with a pixelated, glitchy, and/or warped style.
-
Checker. There probably is a more accurate way to say this but a game element to checks to see if all the conditions have been satisfied for a given level to either load the next level or transitional element.
-
Not a mechanic per se but we would love to have audio and video support for sound effects, ambient music and the like.
Questions
-
Can this be done in the free version of Unity?
-
What tutorials should my team watch to go from 0 - completed game in 4 weeks time?
-
Are there specific tutorials that the artists should watch? Anything specific a computer science major should watch?
That’s about it. You tell me what to do and where to do it and I’ll do it and relate it to my team. I’m not here to defend my points. I’m here to receive guidance and follow it. End of story. ![]()
