Hi all,
I’m very interested in learning how to use Unity3D, but I was wondering if the learning curve and the time invested is gonna be too huge for someone that wants to build applications as a hobby more than anything.
I have VERY little experience in 3D, just a few weeks course to build some basic objects in Maya, but I do have some years experience in programming (as this is my job) in C#, Visual Basic, ActionScript, Javascript, ASP, PHP… etc. And experience in graphic design.
I currently build small games in flash, but nothing extremely complex.
So my question is… Will this software be too much for one individual instead of a team of developers / designers? Would I need more knowledge and experience in 3D and other technologies?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
Well, I’m much like yourself in that respect
Have a play with the trial, spend some time over at will’s site www.learnmesilly.com on the unity tutorials and also dont forget to try out the official tutorials.
So, all in all… the waters fine - come in and enjoy yourself
Unity is an amazing piece of software and an amazing gfx engine. You have a good grounding in coding, so you should find the scripting a fairly easy transition. A lack of 3D model creation isn’t to much of a prob as 3rd party models can be purchased etc. I come from a programming background and had never created a model before unity, that said, I now really enjoy modelling too… so much so, I bought modo.
Grab the Unity trial and dive in… You won’t look back!
Good luck,
Matt.
Thanks for the help. I will look into it
yup,
I’m using Unity with Blender.
To be honest remembering the Blender hotkeys after a month of not using it is more difficult than scripting in Unity.
And being a hobbyist actually gives you an advantage. It means you can take as long as you want to learn whatever you want to.
