Advice for Textures

Hi , I have a few questions on textures that have been giving me a few problems.

  1. I have a gui texture for my main menu , it’s 480x320 should I still scale it up to 512x512 so I can get it fully optimized?

  2. should I scale up small icons like a 23x35

  3. For a basic game is it worth using texture atlasing - where can I found out how to use it?

  4. How can I tell if my game needs optimising at all?

  5. is it better to texture 3d elements for GUI’s or just use normal Unity GUI stuff?

Thanks

  1. Any texture you use on an OnGUI element will be scaled up to the nearest power of 2 square automatically when building the game.

  2. They are scaled up automatically too.

  3. On iPhone, yes, texture altasing is very important. You need to reduce RAM and that automatic upscaling of non-square textures kills performance. All those little 40x100 pixel buttons add up fast.

  4. In Xcode, go to Run >> Run with Performance Tool >> Activity Monitor or Allocations and check out how much RAM is being used. You want to keep it under 30MB. You can also use the Xcode console while the game is running to see if you get any memory warnings on game load. I got a bunch first time I checked!

  5. Best solution is EZGUI! Look for the thread in the iPhone forum.

Thanks for those great tips liquid graph.

My game is about 65% done does it look ok in terms of performance so far?

Forgot to mention the this performance test was done on a first gen iPhone.
