Advice on creating levels for 2D game

I have been creating 2D platform games for many many years and used “tiles” in a self made level editor to create the levels.

I am now considering to switch to 2D in a 3D game (as shown in the 2D Tutorial) but this is very different from what I am used to since “tiling” seems not to be used for 3D games.

I therefore seek advice on how I should approach level creation. I have the basics of creating a 2D game in a 3D engine down, but I am not sure how to approach this.

I am using Cinema 4D to create the level and I use a simple polygon (line to line) to outline the walkable area. When I have completed the profile I extrude the polygon to give it a depth.

My questions are:

  1. Is this a good approach from a level creation perspective?

  2. How do I get the textures to follow the upper edge so that I can have grass on the top edge (like in the attached picture)?

Hope that you can help me out on this with some advice.

Best regards
Kim

No one who can help?

try looking on some tutorials on 3d and texturing in Cinema 4D on Youtube.

The models must be unwrapped to make the textures to go were you want …

You can still use tiles if you want, they’d just be made out of polygons instead of images.

Exactly, can you not just make reusable textured cubes instead of images?

For a game such as this, why not create an editor for it within unity itself? Click to place a prefab of a terrain slope or enemy, save it’s position and all the others in a text file for use by the actual game.

You can even put some polish on it and ship it with your game as an added bonus.
