Hi Guys, I’m new to the forums so please forgive me if I’ve posted this in the wrong place!
My nephew is going to be buying the Unity engine, so that he can develop a demo of a game he is working on. He’s apparently spoken to someone at Unity, who has recommended that he purchase an Apple Mac instead of a PC – which is handy because I’m a bit of an expert on Apple hardware!
What sort of Mac should he be looking for? I’m guessing he needs as much processing power, RAM and graphics performance as possible? Is Unity 32-bit or 64-bit? Would he benefit from more than 4GB of RAM?
I can get him a good deal on the following:
Apple Mac Pro (base configuration)
8GB RAM upgrade
Apple 23" Cinema Display
Would this configuration be suitable/overkill? Would he be just as well with an iMac?
Hi and welcome,
That setup would be awesome. Personally I started on a g4 and now use a 1st gen intel imac. Imacs are quite good you know, but be sure to get some kind of warranty, because when apples go down, it hurts.
The videocard is obviously quite inportant, and with that box setup, could either be a feature or a limitation.
Good luck, and good on you for supporting your nephew into this.

Possibly because Unity editing tools only run on a Mac at the moment…
Depends on the game he’s going to make. Yes, more power is better, if you can afford it. Most of us at work, for example, use MacBook Pros (Core 2 something, 2GB RAM, Radeon X1600 or GeForce 8600).
Currently Unity is 32 bit. Having more than 4GB of memory probably won’t make a difference (unless he’ll want to have Unity, Photoshop, Maya and a bunch of other heavy programs open at the same time).
Getting a more powerful graphics card is better than having 8GB of RAM, in my opinion.
iMac works just fine as well. The lowest-end model does not have a very fast graphics card, but it works fine. Hey, some people are using Unity on a PowerPC MacMini (G4, 512MB RAM, 32MB graphics card)!
