Aligning Real World Objects with VR Simulated Objects

Does anyone have any idea how to go about aligning a real world object with a virtual version of it in Unity for VR (Vive preferably)?

An example, for clarity:

Suppose you have a chair, and a model of the chair in Unity. How would you set up Unity/Vive so that the chair in the Unity scene corresponds to the physical chairs position in relation to the Vive’s registration space? The chair won’t move, and doesn’t need to be actively tracked, just aligned at the beginning.

You really can’t. Vive relies on the multiple IR detectors on the controllers and the headset to find their location in space. Short of adding the same thing to your chair, you’re out of luck.

I guess you could do some sort of “setup” routine, where you ask the user to place the controller (or sit on the chair) before the game starts, and then register that position and orientation, and use it to place the chair in virtual space.
