Alkahest

Hey guys (and sorry for the somewhat massive logo at the bottom, couldn’t figure out how to shrink it without having to edit it in PS).

Me and a few of my school mates have decided to try and make a game. It’s a game where you run a little potion shop in the medieval era.

In this shop you can order ingredients (which arrive every night, so you have to think ahead). With the ingredients you order, you can do all sorts. First, you’ll have to go and pick them up. The way this works is by when you get close enough, on the screen it’ll tell you to click and hold to pick it up. If I click and hold with my right mouse button it’ll go to my right hand, and vice versa, this way you can carry two items at once. Then you bring these items over the crafting table and then add them to your potion and click craft. Now depending on what ingredients you’ve got on there the stats for the potion will change. For example, if I add apples and carrots the healing factor of the potion will be high and the deadly factor will be pretty low. But if I add Acidum Salis, which is very poisonous, the healing factor will be pretty much nil and the deadly factor will be very high.

Basically:
Alkahest is a unique game in which you take the role of an aspiring alchemist working on the Magnum Opus – the discovery of the Philosophers Stone, and the acquisition of eternal life. As you sell your own mixtures, potions and elixirs, you learn more of alchemy and unlock more intricate and useful ( or useless) instruments. As your knowledge expands, so does your shop, attracting more and more important visitors and expanding your influence over the village in which you’ve set up shop – and the world as a whole.

-Create custom named Potions, and create your own Recipes
-Explore a system of moral choices and “factions”
-Fund and help equip expeditions to The New World, increasing your range of ingredients
-Help people in need of your aid, ranging from a rat infestation to eternal life
-Build up a name for yourself amongst the villagers and the Town Criers, be it good or bad
-Upgrade your shop with new rooms and stunning new equipment (or something to that effect).

At the moment it’s pretty early on in development, so there’s still quite a few features lacking (eg. Research).

If you want to check the game out a bit more, go to www.goodenoughgames.biz or www.indiedb.com/games/alkahest

But, if you want to see why Alpha can be so much fun, and AI development can be such a pain in the ass, here you go:

I will keep updating this thread as development continues, but as for now if you just tell me what you think of the idea mainly, because most of the graphics are very place-holder at the moment.

And also it’ll be nice to talk to other people that understand JS, because considering I’m the only coder on the team I get lonely sometimes :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks interesting.

You should leave the AI like that.
You are Good Enough Games after all :stuck_out_tongue:

trololo haha

Hah, aww that video made my day

Sounds like a pretty original idea for a game, which is fantastic. It’s good that you aren’t simply trying to do what everyone else is doing.

Have a new update video for you guys, the game still need a lot of work (hence Alpha) but it’s getting there on the programming side of things

Honestly Tom. I am truly amazed on how simple but fun the game looks. Mind if I try to make a different game that has different goods?

I sent you a PM

Looks nice! Is it ok if i ask, how you make the walking ‘‘animation’’
I mean, the camera goes a little bit up and down when walking. And the same with the hands.
How did you do that?

loved your AI demo
definitely following your thread

Im loving the concept of the game! And those videos where brilliant to watch! Keep up the great work

That gave me a good laugh. AI is a bitch.

I love the concept, pretty original…which is rare. Going to be watching this thread.

Haha I’d totally buy this!

Are you using Unity Pro for this?

I was originally going to make my own script for it but in the end I found one on the unity wiki, this is it: http://wiki.unity3d.com/index.php/Headbobber

As for the hands, Sami (1 of our artists) made me a holding animation, and all I had to do was to position the objects into the hands. Basically when I’m holding down the mouse button, the objects location is set every frame to that of the hand. That way it looks as if you’re carrying it.

Nope we’re not. This project is supposed to be our sort of kickstarter, thus giving us enough money to buy Unity pro. We didn’t want to actually use kickstarter because well, we just want to see if we can do it without its help. But in the end we may need to, only time will tell.

If you want a little more complete system, UFPS is pretty awesome.

You can set an object(fruit) to be a child of another object(hands). That way you don’t have to set the position each frame. Then un-set that relationship just as easily.

Unity pro is overrated. Stick with free until you make too much money to know what to do with.

Keep posting updates and keep us informed. Most original idea i’ve seen on here in a while.

Thanks for that advice, and as for the holding thing, I will definitely change that some point in the near future

Whey we started work again, I have finally managed to get the AI working

More details can be found here: http://www.goodenoughgames.biz/apps/blog/show/33101652-ai-mark-ii

I would copy paste the whole thing but that’s just too much effort

Whey, glad you started work on it again and congratz on getting the AI to work, viewed this in the past and watched the videos, i just love the concept of this game
