Am I allowed to use sprites from Unity-made packages for commercial purposes?

Hello,

I recently downloaded the Sprite shape 2d package and imported the free samples included in the package to get accustomed to it.

I played around with the example sprites and want to use them in my next project with and without modifications.

Am I allowed to use those in my project commercially?

  • There must be a licence text inside the package; look into it.
  • Making your own sprites in an image editor like The GIMP is not difficult at all.

You are right, there is a license file granting access ā€œfree of charge, to any person obtaining a copy
of this software and associated documentation filesā€.
I guess that means I can do whatever I want with the sprites. Thanks

To your second point: It would actually take a long time to recreate them. Why spend time creating something when its already out there…

Really? Why using something someone else made when you can do it yourself? More rewarding. And you can add things of your own to the original you are trying to copy to make it more personal.

Does this apply to game engines as well?

I guess its a matter of perspective.

If you develop games for the sole purpose of making money, its probably wise to make one crappy game every week by creating as few own assets as possible, work with a publisher and pump those games out there until one sticks.

If coding is your hobby and passion, maybe it could also be fun to make your own game engine. One thing is for sure though, it wouldnt be very productive to do so.

 Why not?

True, but I’d really like to write my own engine, just for the fun of it and allow me to say ā€œI know what a game engine is made of now that I’ve made one.ā€

Fair enough

I would argue it could be productive, but maybe in the very long term.
