I was amazed by this demo, it looks like something you would be proud to have in your show reel, using a modern game engine.
And I think if I was to make something similar in Unity using modelling and textures it would be massive in comparison. Not even sure where I would start with the dissolving globular city scene, it would probably take a lot of work and animation in a 3d package.
Does unity have a Demo scene?
And if it did could a Unity demo scene have a 64k challenge, e.g. we only measure your projects assets not the engine itself?
Could a Unity demo scene, start to delve into what Unity can do closer to the metal or work out smart ways to do more with less?
I’ve just been thinking over the weekend, I’m pretty sure that my next game after the mobile one is going to be an attempt of the same kind as kkrieger. I have some procedural bits and pieces that I’d like to try and make into a full game.
I think it’s really important for us indies to push really hard at pcg, it’s a way to trade off some quality for content, but at the same time doing something innovative. And the experience can be really unique.
There is a demo scene within the Unity community. I’ve often thought the folks who love visuals might want to get into it. Might be quite satisfying in itself and also helpful for improving graphics for games. Although demo scene is a different beast (lookup tables, prepping for display FX before hand, etc) some of it would carry over.
Anyway search on YouTube and you will find them. Also some people use Unity for the large demo competitions.
Google Farbrausch, you will like most of their demos.
Or go to http://csdb.dk and look for some YouTube videos of the top demos mentioned there - most of the stuff there is years old but to this day I find those demos most inspiring, given the limitations of the c64. For those who have not had one, it might be worth just checking the specs out to appreciate the demos.
